More than a few of us have had that moment of panic when our headphone cords catch on an object and cut the listening short — sometimes permanently. Researchers at North Carolina State University could help mitigate those minor musical catastrophes with wiring that stretches up to eight times its normal length. The method fills an elastic polymer tube with a liquid gallium and indium alloy that delivers the electricity. By keeping the materials separate, unlike many past attempts, the solution promises the best of both worlds: the conduction we need, and the tolerance for tugs that we want. NC State already has an eye on stretchable headphone cords, as you’ll see in the video after the break, but it also sees advantages for electronic textiles that could endure further abuse. As long as the team can eventually solve a problem with leakage when there’s a complete break, we’ll be glad enough to leave one of our common audio mishaps in the past.

Today was the official grand opening of the MakerBot Store in New York. Head over to 298 Mulberry Street and you can buy MakerBot printers, filament, and pre-made items, such as bracelets, watches and toys. And that’s not all.
MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis unveiled a new 3D photo booth powered by ShapeShot. The photo takes a couple of minutes and costs $ 5 for three reusable shots. Then you can order prints of your head. In 3D. Depending on the size, they run $ 20, $ 40 or $ 60. The most important part remains the fact that there is now a physical address to experience 3D printing.
“Ever since we started, people kept saying that this is science fiction — it’s not real. So we had to make a MakerBot Store,” Pettis said. Understanding 3D printing takes time, and a store is a good way to reach a new audience. But MakerBot also hopes to sell Replicator printers, filament and little printed objects manufactured in New York.
Most of the objects in the store have been designed within the previous week and printed over the previous two days. Such a short product cycle is something new in manufacturing. With the store, it’s all about making 3D printing mainstream.
“My hope is that the next lemonade stand for kids will be a MakerBot stand,” Pettis said. For now, NASA and GE are the two most important clients, and four of the top ten architectural companies use a Replicator. MakerBot has sold 15,000 printers so far.
When asked whether it’s possible to select a 3D design at home, print it in the store and pick it up later, Pettis answered “not yet.”

The ESPN app for Xbox received a significant update today, opening up all of ESPN’s live sports content to subscribers. Previously, users could only stream certain sporting events with no access to original programming, like SportsCenter and SportsNation. With the update, Xbox Live Gold subscribers that also have an eligible cable or broadband package can live stream any of ESPN’s channels, such as ESPN, ESPN2, Buzzer Beater, and others, including feeds of games as they happen. While those without an existing cable or satellite subscription are still out of luck, ESPN’s decision to expand its offerings to cable subscribers is a small step in the direction of universal availability.

Microsoft’s Research team in Cambridge opened its doors last week to offer a sneak peek at the future. Microsoft has spent nearly $ 30 billion on research and development over the past three years, and this particular lab — consisting of over 100 researchers mainly from Europe — has contributed to Bing, Xbox Kinect, and the functional programming language F#.
Microsoft is now looking well ahead into the future of computing and how user interfaces and the way we interact with machines will change. During an open house, the software maker demonstrated a variety of ways that the company is looking to improve its Kinect sensor and use it for an augmented reality future. From Kinect Fusion, that creates an interactive real-time 3D model…
