We’ve heard whispers of it before, but apparently Hulu may be working on an iPad app which will be one of the first places where the popular video service will attempt to integrate a subscription-based approach. More »

I just find it hard to pay for something that i can get for free over a medium ive already invested thousands of dollars into (TV, cable, satellite, etc).
I really hope this doesnt go well for Hulu…not because i dont like them, but because i dont want a trend to be starting.

So let me get this straight…
You’re testing on a demographic full of people who have $500+ to rush out and burn on the latest iPaperweight?
Rather than a demographic including boatloads of frugal discerning individuals with half a brain who tend to like free things, and dislike paying premiums on stuff that they can perhaps get elsewhere for cheaper (or free)? (Also known as “the entire internet-using public”, also also known as your current target audience. Incidentally, also also also known as people who don’t use Macs.)
Of course this is going to encourage them to push a paid model, because the demographic is completely lopsided. This is a rather blatant tactic to both generate revenue for them as well as provide guaranteed (and completely bullshit) “justification” for them to shove a paid model on the rest of us.

@Kerfudle: Your a Kerf!: You could just as easily mask your device as a computer though..

My cable tv bill is currently about $50 per month, and there’s Tivo’s monthly $12. Admittedly, I signed up for all this when I was really, really into Formula 1.
Then Schumacher left (Michael; Ralf can suck it), and the whole thing went bust.
Currently, there are about a dozen shows that I watch. I would gladly pay, say, $15 / month for Hulu as long as they nix the ads.
This is the future, people. And yes, even TV producers have to eat.

I think it is things like this that keep me firmly in a Win7 tablet or Android Tablet frame of mind. I can just run HULU in a browser without waiting to get fleeced by some app store bullshit.

@IUHoos: Too true.
Still, I love Hulu and would gladly pay for it.
EljhHck
Lol if this is true than this is one of the biggest reasons not to get the ipad…I for one don’t understand the concept of paying for tv twice…
I think it is safe to say anyone getting an ipad has tv in their living area…so why pay twice?
My final take on an ipad is it’s an easy way to get consumers to spend tons of money on digital media without them second guessing it…
I will sit in the corner until my touchscreen MacBook pro arrives

Hey Rosa, might want to tag this either ipad/appleipad because while testing out the tags myself, I noticed this still came up. While it’s not necessarily tied only to the iPad, I’m sure the rabid anti-iPad haters will be sure to start the hating.

@Channan: Hulu blocks access from mobile devices even if they run flash. Same reason they block access from the ps3.
Kerfudle: Your a Kerf!
@GeneralManager: Did you think that through? Do you really believe if the subscription model is successful on ipad then they won’t add it to their main site as well?
@Channan: Ipad 2(for screwing other devices),Android 0

@GeneralManager: Dang you beat me to it. Should have refreshed the page before commenting.

Hmm. Will it fly with apple though?
This may be the start of the first big iPad app approval controversy. If apple is working on their own subscription based itunes TV solution (as has long been rumored) then you’d think they’d be hesitant to let Hulu launch one of their own this early on the iPad.
tande04
@GeneralManager: mine neither..
however my desktop purrs w/win7 and mce and a dual clear qam tuner.
i’d still pay for an iPad app though.

If the iPad had flash, I would consider.
Flash = all the free tv I want to watch online (until Hulu’s main service gets fees associated)…at least there’s always theofficefree.com and thedailyshow.com
Therefore…[gizmodo.com])&
#2 looks promising

@lizon: I just checked and my television it’s from Sony not Apple, and therefore not magical.
GeneralManager
Honestly, I wouldn’t subscribe based on their past of breaking things at a whim. Sure they weren’t all on the up and up but Hulu isn’t the most trustworthy when it comes to your software working. Who knows what happens when Hulu decides your subscription is off base?
CountDorkula
@pijmodo: Actually we’ll have Flash soon and that’s definitely coming to certain Android phones (I have a Nexus One so I’ll get it at least). So while you’re paying a subscription for a Hulu app if it even comes, I’ll be watching it for free on their website.
iPad maybe 1, Android 2
Channan
@pijmodo: Did you think that through? Hulu.com runs on Flash, therefore with Flash 10.1 Android would be viewing it for free.
But maybe you like paying for things? I don’t know.
BTW, what is Chrome Android?
GeneralManager
@EljhHck:
There’s this magical device called a television…… :p
lizon
iPad 1, Chrome Android 0.

@MrCheatachu: Your hard work will not go unpunished.
SAMtheMAN99
if would cut ads and give me flash free hulu for my iPad Im game.
money? where do I send it.
Reduced ooooo, ooooooooooooooooooo
I would love this to take off. As long as the desktop version remains free, let the ipad users subsidize my free television viewing…
MrCheatachu
@SAMtheMAN99: People with money coming out the wazoo? I should hope that if you are spending $800 on a tablet you can float the $8 per month. If it was the <$300 netbook crowd you should pedal your wares elsewhere…
MrCheatachu
@Smurfette’s dropkick: That sounds reasonable to me. How else will I catch The Office?
EljhHck
This seems like a great idea, but will it float with the iPad’s target demographic?
SAMtheMAN99
Uh… yeah, good luck with that, Hulu.
Gordon McAlpin
If it means HTML 5 video and tons of TV shows for (what I’d guess) about $7-$15 per month? I’d say its worth it.
Smurfette’s dropkick
Yes.
