During today’s unveiling of the Apple iPad, Steve Jobs says this device has an IPS display.

Is this similar technology to OLED? I hope it’s the same type of screen that other devices such as the Driod use. And it’s not just the same old display technology of the iPhone.

In-plane switching (IPS) was developed by Hitachi Ltd. in 1996 to improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor color reproduction of TN panels at that time. Its name comes from the main difference from TN panels, that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular to it.

This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good color reproduction.

In this method, the electrical field is applied through each end of the crystal, but since this requires two transistors for each pixel instead of the single transistor needed for standard thin-film transistor (TFT) display, it results in blocking more transmission area, thus requiring a brighter back light that consumes more power making this type of display less desirable for notebook computers.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a light-emitting diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds.

Its just a traditional LCD screen. Same as what the iPhone has. IPS is the best version of LCD, but its not a big deal since everything already uses it.
