The Wikipad lives! After several delays, the company is ready to bring its gaming contraption to the market. The final model is different from the concepts, but it’s more portable, cheaper and much more slick. I want it.
The Wikipad’s messages is still the same. With controls wrapping around a 7-inch screen, the Wikipad attempts to be Android’s Game Boy — it looks more like a Sega Game Gear. The company hasn’t announced an exact ship date but it’s coming this Spring.
The original Wikipad used a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 screen and a Tegra 3 chip. It was to cost $ 500 and would probably have failed. Hard.
As Engadget explains, the company delayed the 10.1-inch model for refinement, but as it was approaching launch, the screen manufacturer discounted the Wikipad’s panel. So Wikipad charged forward towards making a smaller model, which was apparently already on the roadmap.
The 7-inch Wikipad still rocks a 1280 x 800 screen, just in a 7-inch form. The gaming controls still backpack onto the tablet, which, still uses a Tegra 3 chip. And now at $ 249, the tablet actually has a chance to make it in the market. The Wikipad has a chance to be what the PS Vita should have been.
The portable gaming world is missing a device like the $ 249 Wikipad: A serious, but still affordable gaming platform that can multitask. Sony missed a big opportunity with the PS Vita. The hardware on Sony’s latest portable is fantastic. It’s a powerhouse of computing, but the user experience, and reliance on physical media, stifles its ability to be something other than a gaming machine. And at $ 249, the PS Vita should be able to browse the web with ease and support a rich, even if it’s limited, ecosystem of apps.
Android gaming could be the next big thing. With dedicated gaming devices like the OUYA, Game Stick and the Wikipad, there will suddenly, almost overnight, be a whole batch of devices craving new games.
The 10-inch Wattpad is still coming, per the company’s president of sales. Look for it by Christmas 2013 and expect Tegra 4 power.

Microsoft is building its own 7-inch gaming tablet. Multiple sources familiar with plans within Redmond have confirmed to The Verge that initial hardware planning for an Xbox Surface is underway. Specifications for an Xbox Surface 7-inch tablet computing device leaked back in June ahead of Microsoft’s Surface RT and Surface Pro announcement. We’re told that the initial specs were accurate and that the final implementation is being worked on.
The Xbox Surface will likely include a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM designed specifically for gaming tasks. We’re told these specifications could be altered to accommodate an unannounced Intel SoC and that the Xbox Surface is being developed independent of specific hardware…
We were worried there, for a minute. After code explorers found that Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7-inch had both a locked bootloader and extra security measures, there was a brief concern that the pseudo-Android tablet might be very tough to hack. As it turns out, there was no reason to lose faith. Hashcode, Justin Case, Reverend Kyle and Sparklym3 from the XDA and RootzWiki forums have successfully rooted the smaller Kindle Fire HD in a repeatable form, giving anyone courageous enough to load ADB the control they want over the tablet they bought. Just remember the usual caveats if you choose to dive in: while the root isn’t a lengthy process, as you’ll see in the video after the break, there’s still the ever-present risk of bricking the device should something go wrong. Having seen what can be done with the original Kindle Fire after a little tinkering, we’re intrigued as to what happens with its more capable sequel.

As expected, the big news at today’s gadget-filled Amazon event is the successor to the Kindle Fire, which was launched in New York, roughly this time last year. It’s not the Fire 2, however — this is the Kindle Fire HD. It’s clear the minute you grab hold of it that Amazon wanted to start over with this device in a number of ways. There’s none of that OEM build quality from the first go-round. This is a nice, slim device that really feels as though it can stand up to some of the nicer Android tablets out there — we’d certainly put our initial impressions of build up there with the Nexus 7.
The corners of the tablet are more rounded than its predecessor, with a glossy bezel going around the display — a little bit of the rubberized backing creeps out on top of this. There are no buttons here, however. If you want to effect the screen, give it a tap and you get a small virtual menu on the side. As advertised, the display is quite vivid. Amazon talked up the decrease of glare, though it was a bit hard to tell just how successful the company was, given the fact that we’re indoors. The device has a matte rear, with that stereo speaker going down a line in a middle, vents on either side.
Performance-wise, this seemed pretty snappy, and we got the pre-loaded (at least on Amazon’s own tablet) Hunger Games movie to load quite quickly, thanks no doubt to all of the investment the company put into the WiFi side of this device. Interestingly, there was a little lag as we were flipping through the pages of a book, with the Fire doing a little loading every few pages or so.

The latest Gmail Android app update brings several new features, but this is a must-have for 7-inch tablets. Google slightly reworked the UI and it now works better with 7-inch tablets. Previously, when in landscape mode, the app would occasionally abruptly cut off messages. That’s now fixed for 7-inch tablets running Android 4.0 or later. But sorry, kids, the app is still missing pinch-to-zoom within messages.
The new version also brings a new label API for 3rd-party developers, a feature likely related to homescreen widgets.
This update comes a few weeks after Google released the Nexus 7 to the retail market. Users quickly discovered that Gmail, one of the Nexus 7′s core apps, wasn’t as polished as shiny as it should have been. The updated version is now available from Google Play, which should apply the appropriate sheen to the app.

Amazon is said to be working on the next version of the Kindle Fire with more premium materials, including some type of metal casing. But perhaps even better (depending on your size preferences), the long-standing rumor that Amazon is allegedly working on a 10-inch tablet have resurfaced.
BGR reports that “Amazon is finally ready to move forward with the [10-inch] tablet.” General rumors include a quad-core processor and a higher quality screen than the original fire, along with the obvious size bump. But the original 7-inch Fire is also due for a revamp, and the same source reports a “chrome-look rib” in the brand new metal casing on the device’s back (which will replace the plastic soft-touch shell on first-gen models), and a thinner profile.
There is also talk of a front-facing camera, microUSB and HDMIout port on the 10-inch model, with no buttons to be seen on either device. BGR’s report claims that the tablets are “thinner versions of the iPad”, and if true, this could eventually ignite a patent war on a new front for both companies.
We’ve also recently heard that the new Fire will cost the same as the original, despite the spec bump, at $ 199, while the original Fire will get cut to $ 150. This is good news to both consumers and Amazon, as the ecommerce giant can afford to take a loss on hardware as long as it’s outweighed by digital content sales.
Rumors suggest that Amazon will announce the new tablets in late July, but that’s still unconfirmed.
