Windows Phone 8's YouTube app goes from glorified bookmark to full application in latest update

The Windows Phone 8 YouTube app has been woefully underutilized, acting more or less as a bookmark stand-in and redirecting users to the web. No more, as the app’s getting a major update today that makes it act more like a standard WP8 app — you can pin various components right into your Live Tile set and play videos (as music) in the background, even when your phone’s locked. Standards like social sharing and search are also in there, and a “new and innovative playlist design” rounds out the refresh. Perhaps the Microsoft / Google relationship is mending? We can’t be sure, but this is certainly one step in the right direction. We’ve dropped the full list of new features beyond the break, and you can grab the app update for yourself right here.

Sony patent application puts electrodes in a pillow, easesI'm gonna start a political debate show in Ireland called Shillelaghs, Stouts and Shouts you out of slumber

You could monitor your sleep using the science of actigraphy but, as we’ve learned, accelerometers don’t always make for the best slumber trackers. The real deal stuff, used by scientists, requires all sorts of electrodes, which are a tad cumbersome and tend to yank out hair. Sony is proposing a system that removes the glue and sticks the sensors in your pillow. This is according to a patent application the company filed that proposes, among other things, an advanced alarm clock that monitors brain waves to detect when you enter and leave REM sleep. One particular example has it guiding users though an efficient power nap, by starting a timer once they’ve started dozing and only waking them once they’ve come out of a deeper sleep state. The proposed alarm could take any number of forms, from a buzzer, to a flashing light or bed shaking motor. To dig through the application for yourself hit up the source link.

Question by : Just bought a Samsung Focus, trying to find a GPS application that gives Turn by Turn Directions? Just like the title says, I would like to add that this phone is awesome and more that I could of asked for, definitely surpassed my expectations best Windows 7 Phone out there.

Best answer:

Answer by bw022Run the “Maps” application. It is included with all WP7 devices. Shows your location on a map. You can also type in a business name or address and it will display that. Finally, press the ‘Directions’ button at the bottom and it will display driving instructions from your location to the destination — along with showing the route highlighted in a smaller map above. As you reach the intersection, the GPS will automatically scroll to the next segment and highlight the next instruction.

Google introduces Maps Tracks and Geolocation APIs, awaits your next locationenabled application

In its never-ending quest to dominate the global mapping scene, Google has just rolled out a new pair of APIs designed to help organizations build their own location-enabled applications. The first is Google Maps Tracks API, which gives developers the ability to concoct apps that can store, display and analyze GPS data on a map. In other words, those in need of a geofencing program — fleet managers and the like — need look no further. Secondly, there’s the Google Maps Geolocation API, which “enables an application or device to determine its own location without the use of GPS by looking up the locations of nearby WiFi access points and cell towers.” It’s pretty clear that enterprises are the target here, but it seems like only a matter of time before consumer-facing location apps tap into ‘em. After all, the world needs more indoor mall apps. Fact.

Apple files patent application for 'intelligent automated assistant,' sounds like Siri

Siri’s managed to make it into several Apple devices now, so it doesn’t shock us to spy the company’s attempt to patent the polite (somewhat frosty) tones of its voice navigation system. A pretty deep patent application filed today describes an “intelligent Automated Assistant,” with the claims describing an application that is guided through the user’s speech — and all wrapped in a “conversational interface.” So far, so Siri. The filing elaborates on Apple’s earlier filings, explaining how this digital assistant furthers the users’ demands with additional requests for speech-based information — hopefully resulting in that map location or a movie booking you were after.

This “user intent” is then put to use, launching an additional app or performing the specified function, while non-speech input (presumably like the ability to correct your requests in text form) get a brief mention. We do get plenty of description on commands though, with some pretty thorough response tables and examples of “anchor text” — something that the automated assistant tries to pluck from your ramblings in order to make sense of them. The full version resides at the source below, if you’re looking for 51 verbose pages explaining Siri’s inner workings.
