Archos teases G10 with first press shot, vows full launch in three weeks

Previously, Archos has only ever given us a fleeting glimpse of the G10 xs tablets it’s planning to launch this year — FCC filings don’t count. Cogs in the company’s media machine are turning once again, as the company has posted a teaser press image on Facebook with confirmation that a launch is just three weeks away. It’s difficult to read the tea leaves from the oblique shot we’re given, although we already know that the Android 4.0 slate will support microSD, mini-HDMI and a connector for that Eee Pad Transformer-style keyboard dock. Our main questions now center on when the G10 xs pops up in the US as well as the degree of bang we’ll get for our buck.

Archos Arnova GBook heads to the FCC, may have literary ambitions

Archos makes regular stops at the FCC. We know this. When it passes an Arnova-badged device called the GBook through the US agency, though, that piques our interest. The name immediately suggests a reading-friendly Android tablet in the vein of the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet, but there’s not much in the way of imagery and details to make a definitive judgment call. The hand-friendly small design and the 802.11n WiFi inside only fuel those suspicions, however. We don’t see clues in the testing as to when the Arnova GBook might reach stores; that said, the looming back-to-school and holiday seasons may have some sway in getting the device to bookworms sooner rather than later.

archos g10 xs

Veteran tablet maker Archos has released a teaser video of a new tablet they’re going to be releasing (we presume) later this year. It’s called the G10 XS (the latest in a series of G tablets) and it has a few differentiating features that may call your name.

As others have noted, the only way for Android tablets to set themselves apart from one another is in design and specs. Archos has found one more that seems to have been mostly neglected: material. Ubergizmo reports that the shell of the G10 series will be made of “paper-thin” steel. Perhaps that’s how they managed to get the thing down to an impressive 7.6mm thick.

Check out the teaser video below.

A little artistic license may have been taken; this isn’t, obviously, a video of a device in real life.

The claim to thinnest tablet out there, of course, is short-lived and doesn’t have much of an effect on user experience past a certain point (do you really need that extra half a millimeter in your bag?) — but Archos isn’t divulging any specs yet. It will, however, ship with Ice Cream Sandwich.

And it also will have a close relationship with a keyboard, with which it will dock or possibly just sync. That puts it on a collision course with another major Android player, Asus, whose Transformer series has had a keyboard as a major feature for some time now.

No availability estimate was given, but the price is said to be between €200 and €400, or around $ 250-500.

Other models were mentioned as well, including some budget and mid-range items. Liliputing snapped a few pictures of promotional materials, if you’re curious.

Best Tablet in the World: Archos 80 G9 and Archos 101 G9, my first hands-on

I got lucky enough to be able to play around with the new Archos G9 tablets for a few minutes, they are awesome. Here are some of the features that I think makes this probably one of the best tablets in the world when it comes out in September: – 50% faster than iPad2/Xoom/Transformer/Tab101/etc – Optional unlocked 3G Dongle slides in the back – Built-in kick-stand – HDMI-out (1080p All Codecs High Profile High Bitrates) with most powerful Video/Audio/Photo apps on any device with automatic meta-data and Upnp/Samba streaming support – 2x USB Host (one is dedicated for 3G Dongle) – Honeycomb 3.2 with official Google Marketplace pre-installed – Most importantly, starts at 9 for 8″, 9 for 10.1″, there will be all kinds of options though, 16GB Flash or 250GB hard drive (the 250GB version is likely around 0 more than the 16GB flash version, to be confirmed) This is my first video showing how those tablets are. Look forward to many more videos that I will post about the Archos G9 if I can get some review samples at one point in the next few weeks until and after they are released in September worldwide. I would have liked to see them do 5″ and 7″ G9 tablets as well to be more pocketable (pants 5″ or jacket 7″ pockets), but for now, Archos has nothing to announce regarding more sizes for the G9 series, it’s open to speculation, my speculation is that it may be the reason for them to have to wait for Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich to come and support more screen Video Rating: 4 / 5

Archos ICS

I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that you had perhaps forgotten about the Archos G9 tablets. They haven’t seen much coverage of late, though we did get our hands on one back in October. In our review we found them to be fun but ugly, with various ports and a somewhat untrustworthy build quality, though solid enough for casual use.

But the 8- and 10-inch G9 slates may be due for a refresh, which is exactly what they’ll get come the new year. Archos has confirmed that Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich will be available on the G9 series in Q1 2012. To prove it, they sent us over a video of ICS running on an OMAP 4-powered G9.

I must admit Ice Cream Sandwich definitely paints the slate in a more delicious light, though Archos has reminded us there’s more work to be done. They still have to complete a few more tweaks including hardware acceleration for video support and Archos’ 3G dongle/port support.

As far as tablets go, a couple of interesting things are going to happen between now and the holiday season. One, we’re going to see a glut of smaller 7- and 8-inch tablets running Honeycomb (like this, this and this) hit the market. And if the Kindle Fire and Acer Iconia Tab A100 are any indication, they’re going to be cheaper, making slates palatable to folks who previously couldn’t bring themselves to spend $ 500 on a plaything. The Archos 80 G9, then, is the perfect specimen on both counts. Here you have an 8-inch tablet running Android 3.2 with a kickstand and full-sized UBS port — costing just $ 300 for the base model ($ 270, even, on sites like Amazon). So how does it stack up against other diminutive, aggressively priced tablets? Let’s see.

Listen up, Archos G9 owners, because there’s a hefty firmware update headed your way. The new upgrade, which only recently began rolling out, integrates Google Talk directly within the firmware and introduces a number of bug fixes to the freshly released Honeycomb slates. More specifically, version 3.2.46 brings enhanced volume controls, sharpened camera quality and Flash acceleration support to the eight- and ten-inch tablets, along with a host of other tweaks. For the full list of added features, check out the source link, below.
