AT&T's Garnet Red Galaxy S III for vampires: we go hands-on

While AT&T’s been flaunting a rather patriotic red, white and blue Galaxy S III lineup since launch, the carrier’s exclusive Garnet Red handset’s been rather elusive so far, with pre-orders starting July 15 and deliveries expected July 29. If you’ve been eying Samsung’s blood red $ 199 flagship, you’ll be happy to know that we received our review unit yesterday and snapped a bunch of pictures, including comparison shots with the white and blue models. The phone is identical to its siblings other than the burgundy screen bezel and back cover, and the gunmetal rim running along its edge. It’s a pretty gorgeous color scheme that’s sure to attract vampires everywhere. Still unsure? Peek at our hands-on gallery below, then sound off in the comments.

While the AT&T One X is getting some flack for being blocked from HTC’s bootloader unlocking program, the good news is that it’s officially available starting today. So long as you’re not phased with having Sense 4 sprinkled on top of your 4.7-inch Ice Cream Sandwich, the dual-core, LTE-enabled device is on offer in gray or white for $ 200 with a two-year contract ($ 150 if you order through Amazon Wireless). Hit up the source links below to get your hands on a One X to call your own — and don’t forget parse our review if you’re still making up your mind about this frosty treat.

In case you forget that AT&T’s latest LTE-equipped smartphone hit shelves today, consider this a friendly reminder from your mobile obsessed friends here at Engadget. We’re talking about the LG’s Nitro HD, the 4.5-inch device we lovingly handled last week — loaded with a skinned version of Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, running atop its peppy 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 dual-core processor. If you’ll recall, it’s notably packing a 1280 x 720p screen resolution with an ultra-crisp looking 329ppi, an 8 megapixel rear camera (1.3 MP up front) and a healthy 4GB of internal storage supplemented by an included 16GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB). Thankfully, bloatware on the Nitro is at an all time low, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that’s it’s been confirmed to be loaded with the ickyness of Carrier IQ. Sure, it’s not as tasty as an Ice Cream Sandwich, but if your hungering for LTE-enabled 4G speeds on Ma Bell, at least you now have a third option. It can be yours now for $ 250 with a two-year renewal of service, and you’ll find more info at the source link below.

You didn’t expect Ma Bell to open its first LTE markets without tossing in a few 4G friendly toys, did you? Of course not, we told you as much last week — but today things get official: The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid (formerly known as the Holiday) are ready to take Ma Bell’s new LTE nodes for a spin. Not much has changed since the last time we saw these phones — the Skyrocket still knocks the Galaxy S II’s screen size and processor speed up a notch (a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus Display and 1.5GHz CPU, for those of you keeping track), and the Vivid still has a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1080p HD video recording via an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2GHz CPU. What’s new? AT&T is currently selling both handsets with an online discount, offering the Galaxy S II Skyrocket for $ 150 with a two-year commitment, and the Vivid for a paltry $ 99. If you’re lucky enough to live in one of AT&T’s emerging LTE markets, skip on over to the outfit’s webstore and have a look.

[Thanks, Reggie]

There’s good news and bad news in AT&T’s third quarter report. The carrier’s profit dropped to $ 3.6 billion for the quarter — that’s down from $ 12.32 billion from this time last year. That drop is due in part to the loss of iPhone exclusivity (a matter recently compounded with the addition of Sprint as a carrier for the 4S) and the fact that the company pulled in profits from the sale of assets in 2010. AT&T activated 2.7 million iPhones during Q3, a marked drop over previous quarters. On the up side of things, the sale of Android devices has more than doubled, year over year. AT&T added 2.1 million wireless subscribers, passing 100 million, which the carrier seems quite pleased with, as evidenced by the exceedingly chipper video below.

Judging from the clandestine screenshot you see above, it most certainly seems like that’s the case. A helpful tipster sent us this tasty morsel, from AT&T’s internal system, listing the “iPhone 4s White” beneath a handful of already familiar Apple handsets. Could it be? Is Cupertino actually planning on bringing a white version of its next iPhone out at launch? We’re afraid only time will tell.

Summer is in full swing, but if you happen to take a peek at AT&T’s leaked roadmap for the upcoming two quarters, you might just sense the chill of winter in the air. While this doesn’t appear to be official from Ma Bell, or entirely exhaustive, we’ve gotten a spreadsheet that goes in-depth to out the carrier’s upcoming smartphones. A host of Android devices are on the list — all with Gingerbread — along with two handsets that strut Windows Phone 7.5 and another duo with BlackBerry 7. Of particular note, we see the Samsung SGH-i777 (otherwise known as the Attain), along with the SGH-i927 for you QWERTY slider lovers. Both Sammy’s sport Category 14 HSDPA, or (up to) 21Mbps downloads. Curiously, the Impulse — Ma Bell’s rumored LTE phone — is nowhere to be found. The Motorola MB865, with a full gigabyte of RAM and 8 megapixel camera, aligns very well with the rumored Atrix refresh. You’ve seen the two phones from RIM before, and while Samsung’s Mango handset spent a brief moment in the wild, little is known about HTC’s counterpart. Hopefully we won’t need to wait for the actual change of seasons to learn more.

Looking forward to April 19th? If you just so happen to hold a Windows Phone 7 device on AT&T, you are now. According to a leaked memo posted up over at Winrumors, Ma Bell has just wrapped up its testing of the famed NoDo update, and if all goes well, it’ll be pushed to end users on Tuesday. Owners of the LG Quantum and Samsung Focus will see it first, while HTC Surround owners will need to watch this video on loop until “mid-May.” Just think — next week, you’ll be copying and pasting this very article as often as you please. Huzzah!

AT&T showed off a new 3D set today, the LG Thrill 4G — also known as the LG Optimus 3D — and as we’ve seen before, the 3D glasses-free display is quite fun. The final device design and Android 2.2 software were not final — so this could all change by the time it launches in the next couple months — but it will ship with 2.2 and not the Gingerbread we’re seeing so much of lately. With Sprint’s launch of the EVO 3D just a couple hours ago, we’re thinking 3D in handsets may not be a passing trend. The video samples seen during the demo — which, sadly, you’ll not be able to enjoy in all their three-dimensional glory — are a pretty convincing argument for just how impressive this tech has gotten in such a short time. Enjoy the goods.

Hot on the heels of cameos in various Vodafone Germany and Best Buy systems, the mythical white iPhone 4 is showing up somewhere else — and for many of you, this one hits particularly close to home. Turns out any AT&T subscriber can now log in to their account and see both 16GB and 32GB versions of the phone listed in the model picker, which could definitely suggest that these guys are getting ready to finally make them available along with everyone else. Then again, we’ve also heard that the white iPhone 4 never even left some of AT&T’s inventory systems in the first place, so this might mean very little — but for now, we’re going with the “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” angle. Verizon, your turn.
