The Acer C7 Chromebook is now a bit more powerful. With the RAM doubled to 4GB, the latest flavor of Acer’s inexpensive but still tasty Chromebook should be able to handle a few more simultaneous tasks. Plus, the new model ships with a 6 cell battery able to last 6 hours rather than the 4 cell found in the original. Too bad Acer couldn’t manage these upgrades without inflating the price from a cute $ 199 to a slightly intimidating $ 279.
Acer previously noted that the C7 was a huge hit with the education crowd, once accounting for 5-10% of all of its US shipments.
The C7 is now more expensive than the Samsung Chromebook. For $ 249 the Samsung Chromebook is less expensive, thinner, and sports a longer battery life. However, the Acer still tops the Samsung in some areas.
The Samsung Chromebook only contains a 16GB hard drive where the Acer rocks a 320GB HDD. Plus, with an Intel Celeron 847, now backed with 4GB of RAM, the system is a touch more powerful than the Sammy’s ARM SoC — an important fact for those looking to put Linux on the little notebook.
The new C710-2055 is priced at $ 279 and initially headed only to Acer’s commercial market. At that price it’s sadly out of the impulse buy range, but still a good deal for a platform quickly gaining traction. The original C7 was a huge hit with the education crowd; a repeat performance is likely in the cards.

Nowadays, do you even need to? While memory effect was an issue on NiCad batteries, Lithium Ion units don’t suffer from the same issue. It could also be tied to the belief that most chargers only re-juice batteries up to 95 percent, but we can’t find any authoritative proof on the matter. Apple has reportedly changed its battery suppliers for the iPad and MacBook lines to Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery, both Chinese firms, after Samsung SDI (Samsung’s battery-producing subsidiary) stopped supplying Apple, the China Business News reports. If accurate, this would be just the latest in a series of rifts between the two companies.
Samsung is a crucial component partner for Apple and will remain so at least in the near future, according to CEO Tim Cook on Apple’s most recent quarterly conference call. But recently, rumors have been swirling that the supplier relationship between Samsung and Apple is in the process of eroding. In the past couple of months, we’ve seen reports that Samsung had increased processor prices for Apple (which the company denied) and also claims that Apple was terminating the display supply relationship with the Korean company (also later denied).
The two companies are locked in a global patent battle and are each other’s primary competition in the global smartphone race. In light of the strained relationship, it’s natural that people should expect their supply chain arrangements to suffer, too. And there has been tangible proof; Apple did indeed remove crucial design components for its A-series processors out of Samsung’s hands and in-house, which reduces Samsung to just a manufactory partner. Apple has also reportedly been grooming TSMC and others to take over chip production in the future.
But for all the reports, there seems to be little hard evidence that the relationship is indeed collapsing. Put simply, Samsung has capacity that Apple can’t find elsewhere, and Apple has a very lucrative contract with Samsung, meaning changing their relationship quickly isn’t easy or beneficial to either.
This battery supplier report is just the latest in a series of indicators that the relationship between the two could be undergoing a slow but inevitable shift, but don’t expect to see Apple and Samsung walk away from each other entirely for quite a while yet.

And it manages that, boosting my Retina MacBook’s battery life to around double, and providing quick access to plenty of juice for both iPhones and iPads. Since this is the sequel, you get two USB ports instead of one for simultaneous gadget charging.
Buy the HyperJuice 2 for…… people who always complain about their battery dying, on any device they have. But make sure they’re at least somewhat technically proficient and willing to get their hands dirty: Apple nixed the MagSafe adapter that used to ship with the HyperJuice, so this one requires surgery if you want it to charge (and not just power) your MacBook’s battery. Windows Phone 8 devices have been available since the beginning of the month and users are starting to report early issues across HTC and Nokia handsets. In a thread over at WPCentral with 143 replies, a variety of HTC 8X users report that handsets randomly reboot while in use. A thread on Microsoft’s own support forums has also gained 50 replies complaining about the issues. The Verge can confirm that an 8X we are testing has rebooted on more than one occasion.
