fireproof-dog-jackets.jpg

Because dogs don’t want to catch fire anymore than you do, here’s a line of Ishiatama-kun Wanko (“stone head pooch”) fireproof jackets for dogs. They cost around $ 200, come in small, medium, and large and even have a durable “helmet” section for protecting the animal’s head. I think they’re like, for trained rescue dogs or something because if my house is on fire I am NOT stopping to dig through the back of the closet and find my dog’s fireproof jacket. *getting the puppy-dog eye treatment* Fine, BUT NO SHOES.

Hit the jump in case you were curious what one might look like on a chihuahua or cat.

Hexxeh ports Chromium OS to the Nexus 7 simply because he can video

Coder extraordinaire Hexxeh earned much of his reputation from porting Chromium OS to just about everything, some of his targets more audacious than others. It’s about time he come full circle and port a Google platform to another Google platform, and he just recently did that with a very early Chromium OS conversion for the normally Android-based Nexus 7. Details are scarce other than that WiFi and touch input are working, although that’s really all that’s needed for something so web-centric, isn’t it? We’ll cut Hexxeh some slack when he says he’s in no rush to produce a more easily installed build for Jane and Joe Modder — when he mentions spending hours hacking the OS into the tablet just for fun, he probably deserves some leeway.

[Thanks, yo2boy]

powdered-beer.jpg

Note: Picture shows soda flavors, beer coming soon.

Pat’s Backcountry Beverages have developed a powdered beer concentrate (not a new concept) that, when added to water and placed in their special carbonating bottle, makes “microbrew quality” beer anywhere. No more lugging a cooler full of beer when you go camping! Just filter some river water and PRESTO, you’re getting drunk by the campfire and telling your friends how you would totally fight a bear if it wandered into your camp right now. Pat is currently looking for investors to get the product to market, so if you’re rich and always wanted brew your own beer INSIDE the movie theater, get in touch. Rich but don’t drink? Contact me, I’ll literally do anything for your money. “Anything?” ANYTHING.

Question by JohnnyBoy: Why iPad 2 sold way more than the Xoom? and dont just say because iPad is better lol?

Best answer:

Answer by Thomas DavidApple iPad 2 MC774LL/A Tablet (32GB, Wifi + AT&T 3G, Black) NEWEST MODEL

Pros: Weight. Seriously. The minimal weight of this thing is by far the most impressive feature about it in my opinion. It seems to defy physics and logic that so much could be in such a small space working that hard for that long.

Battery Life. From full to dead my iPad 2 went just over 11 hours with the movie Robin Hood showing twice during that time, the screen at half brightness, wifi turned on, an Angry Birds marathon and a good portion of a book in ibook. That’s better than a work day and that’s constantly on.

Books. This is definitely a Pro, but reading itself could go either way. The great benefit to the iPad is having access to Google Books, ibook, Nook, and Kindle. This allows for some comparison shopping and price competition (although for the most part they’re all usually about the same). Reading in the evenings in bed is great as the back light means you don’t have to worry about keeping others awake, but the glass screen causes some glare trouble when trying to read outside or near a sunny window. If you’re an avid outdoor reader the Kindle might still be your best bet.

Cons: Still no dedicated USB support. While there is a camera add-on that allows for certain USB devices to be used there is no option for mass storage. Some of the Android Tablets allow for this and if you find yourself wanting to use your tablet as a standalone storage device this might be something to consider. The device can read from certain flash drives though, but is largely limited to photo and video files. Jailbreaks offer solutions to this, but those come with their own issues as well.

Still no dedicated SD card slot. This is troublesome on two fronts. First, if you want to import pictures from your camera you have to have an adapter which is just one more thing to carry around. Second, the lack of expansion means you’re limited to what you purchase in terms of storage. I purchased a 32GB iPad last time and never filled it up completely, so for me capacity wasn’t an issue. If you want to be able to have your entire movie collection with you though… you may want to consider whether the iPad 2 can meet your space requirements.

HDMI output. Really this is a Pro and a Con. The iPad does allow for HD output over HDMI but again it requires an adapter. All of these adapters are additional purchases for features that some tablets offer built in. This can be a pain, but then again if you’re not likely to ever use HDMI Output then you’re not paying for something you won’t use.

No Flash Support. This is becoming less and less of an issue as the internet and web developers are moving away from Flash for many websites, but there are a lot still out there relying on Adobe’s Flash to run properly (including a lot of web based games). Before you pick a tablet consider what kind of websites you frequent and try and determine if they are Flash driven or not. If they are you may really want to consider something from the Android offerings as it is expected that they’ll have at least some Flash support.

Rovio launches Angry Birds Heikki because Formula 1 and fortbreaking games are like peanut butter and chocolate

We’ve seen Angry Birds go into strange places both figurative and literal, but Formula 1 racing? That’s a less natural mix than a peanut butter cup. As a way of backing race driver and fellow Finland native Heikki Kovalainen, Rovio has crafted Angry Birds Heikki, a free web game themed all around its namesake’s escapades during the F1 race year. The gameplay changes are more cosmetic than functional, although that leaderboard matters a little more in spirit than it might otherwise. Perhaps the biggest draw is simply that your gameplay schedule is intrinsically linked to Heikki’s: new sections only unlock as the real-world races get near, so you’ll have an incentive to keep coming back until the Sao Paulo race determines the F1 championship on November 21st. Let’s just hope that there aren’t too many road hogs spoiling either Heikki’s fun or our own.

[Thanks, Rodrigo]

venus-transit-1.jpg

Because you missed it, here are several shots from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Laboratory telescope highlighting Venus’ transit of the sun yesterday afternoon/evening. “Where were you when Venus transited the sun in 2012?” people will ask in the future. And how — how will you respond? Lie and say you saw it? That you really wanted to but couldn’t because it was raining? Or that you were going to but had to fight off a bunch of ninjas? I think I’m gonna say the ninja thing. Except replace ninjas with Batman villains. Oh, and it was all for a woman’s honor. So yeah, that’s what I was doing. What were you doing?

Frozen Synapse Good Deal

When Because We May launched last week, it was already a great idea: a week-long sale for independent game developers to showcase their wares. With just over 60 games listed across multiple platforms, however, it wasn’t the biggest sale; that’s changed during the past few days with literally hundreds of new titles joining in. As of now, Because We May is featuring 105 discounted Android games on the Google Play Store, 265 iOS games, and numerous other Mac, Windows, and Linux titles from Steam, IndieVania, and a variety of other sources. We expect the number of titles to balloon every further as the sale winds towards its conclusion, but the discounts end June 1st, so head on over to Because We May to see the full list of titles.

Not the droid you’re looking for? SHOOT ME IN THE FACE DO IT NOW DON’T BE A SISSY. No worries bro, they’re also dropping Storm Trooper, Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Chewbacca designs. They all zip up over your face and have mesh you can see out of, making them perfect for robbing liquor stores. Plus yearbook photos! Did I ever tell in my senior picture I had my eyes closed? It was embarrassing. You know what all my friends nicknamed me? Friends, LOL. :(
