Yesterday, Phoronix had encouraging news about the prospect of Steam for Linux: photo evidence of Left 4 Dead running on Ubuntu 11.10 with AMD Catalysts drivers. Today, the site followed up with video footage of that same scenario, posting a hastily shot clip to show that Valve is indeed making progress — slow as it may be — on porting the game engine to Linux. Got 14 seconds? Check out the video demo below the break.

We’ve already seen press shots and teaser videos of Sony’s S1 Honeycomb tablet and dual-screen S2 (and had our eyes on them ourselves), but Germany’s Golem website managed to spend a bit of time with both of the devices at an event in Munich, and has now provided what’s surely the best look at them to date. Unfortunately, that’s still not exactly a thorough look — there’s just the single image of the S1 above, and an 18 second video of the S2, which you can check out after the break.

Been wondering when BMW’s all-electric i3 city car would turn up on video ever since its bigger, sportier counterpart did its thing last week? Well, here’s your answer. The folks from GMotors recently managed to catch the pint-sized car doing a bit of drifting at the same cold weather test location in Sweden that the i8 was spotted at, and it certainly looks like the 150 horsepower vehicle could be a fun little car to drive. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to take one for a spin yourself anytime soon, as it’s not expected to go on sale until 2013 (at a cost of around $ 40,000). Head on past the break for the video.

Legal proceedings are getting underway in the case of Philadelphia’s Lower Merion School District — you know, the one accused of remotely turning on webcams on its student’s laptops inappropriately? We knew that district IT folks enabled the webcams 42 times in total, capturing pictures every 15 seconds, but now we’re learning that over 400 images were retrieved of a single sophomore and that there are thousands more of other students. There is also seeming proof of use of the webcams even when laptops were not reported stolen, like when a student failed to pay the school’s hardware insurance premiums. The district is apparently not standing behind its two IT employees who had the necessary permissions to enable this remote viewing, technology coordinator Carol Cafiero and technician Michael Perbix, and from what little we can tell now it’s not looking particularly good for them. In a deposition Cafiero refused to answer any questions, citing her Fifth Amendment rights, but an alleged e-mail exchange between the two saw Perbix calling the pictures “a little LMSD soap opera,” to which Cafiero replied “I know, I love it!” That doesn’t sound entirely appropriate…

When you look at most of the two dozen or so people in this photograph, which belongs to a Canadian museum, there’s no doubt that they’re from 1940, the year in which it was taken. But what about that guy? More »
