We’ve been hearing about the Surface for the better part of six months, but in all that time Microsoft has kept secret what might be the tablet’s most important feature: its price. After revealing the price earlier today, the device goes up for pre-order (starting at 12PM ET), so the secret’s out: you can buy a Windows RT-powered Surface starting at $ 499. Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky referred to the desire to match “our competitor” when asked about the price at an event in Redmond this week, so it’s no accident that the 10.6-inch Surface equals the price of the iPad.

Unfortunately, the introductory price doesn’t include the cool Touch Cover case — that bundle costs $ 599. The cheapest model does include 32GB of storage, which…

Google improves maps for several european countries, helps you follow the path well trodden

So it seems the team at Mountain View won’t rest until the whole world is mapped to within an inch of its cartographic life. Good for us though, and especially folk in Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lesotho, Macau, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican City. Those nations have had their maps improved to be more detailed and precise. For example, when planning your saunter around Venice’s St. Mark’s Square, you’ll now see the canals better aligned, along with 3D buildings and more detailed labels for places of interest. There’s some more general housekeeping too, with multilingual names available, and clearer distinction between local and major roads. Planning a trip? Just curious? Drop a pin in the source link to discover more.

Windows Phone Marketplace

We’ve heard Microsoft bandy around a figure of 180 countries getting Windows Phone 8 at launch for a week or so, but up until now we haven’t been able to see the list itself. Things are coming into focus today, as the company tells us exactly which 180 countries are getting Windows Phone 8 Marketplace and the company’s App Hub app submission portal when devices first hit stores. Perhaps more interesting than the list itself is the news that developers in every country with Windows Phone 8 Marketplace will be getting access to App Hub — a massive increase over the 38 markets available for aspiring developers in Marketplace’s previous iteration. Check below to see if your country made the cut (click the image for a larger…

Apple took to the wires this morning to announce that the new iPad will hit 12 countries later this week. Along with South Korea, this coming Friday the new iPad launches in Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Panama, St. Maarten, Uruguay and Venezuela. Then, the following Friday, it hits Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa and Thailand.

For better or worse, the new iPad will carry the suggested retail price of $ 499 USD and up. The iPad 2 will also be available at its new $ 399 price and might be the best bet in the majority of the markets just now getting the new iPad; only the North American markets have LTE data capabilities anyway.

These new markets will help the iPad extend its global dominance in the tablet wars. The iPad is far and away the most popular tablet on Earth but generic Android tablets have no doubt found a home in developing countries thanks to their generally lower price and wider availability. But that won’t stop the Apple machine. Cook & Co. will systematically roll out new products worldwide on Apple’s quest to be a trillion-dollar company.

Question by : Why is Japan one of the only countries in the world doing serious research in robotics and A.I ? And with this i mean not only military tech (like in the U.S).

In Japan they are making robots for 1001 different purposes: medical aids, cooks, cleaner robots, androids.

Why does Japanese people have such an interested in them? (Don’t get me wrong, i wish my country was doing some serious research in A.I and robotics.

Best answer:

Answer by FrankThe United States does quite a bit of serious research on robotics. I know quite a few of the professors doing it at the university where I work.

In Japan, there is more of a social preference for high technology and robotis in everyday life, but there is plenty of research going on here. Google is just one of many companies here working on cars that can drive themselves.

I have a robotic vacuum cleaner that is so popular here, that we forget that it is anything special.

Hospitals use quite a few robots, and they are so common that they are no longer considered cutting-edge technology. They are established technology.

Shortly after announcing its new digital wallet service V.me for developed markets, Visa also made a presence at Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong to promote its new prepaid mobile money platform aimed at the under-banked and the unbanked consumers. By utilizing its recently-acquired Fundamo (which currently has more than 10 million mobile payment subscribers), Visa aims to leverage on the vast number of mobile phone users in developing countries — many of whom are already using local but carrier-bound mobile payment systems — in order to offer a globally interoperable mobile payment network.

This overlaying platform is said to be more secure, much cheaper and more convenient than the likes of Western Union, especially when you can simply make mobile-to-mobile payments when sending money across countries. Nigeria and Uganda will be the first nations to get a taste of this early next year courtesy of telecommunications provider MTN Group, and eventually more developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America will join the list. Full press release after the break.
