Related Posts:In this video I follow four of my students (Kohei Muto, Eric Engelhardt, Clark Gaudry, and David Bernstein) as they build and program a small robot to autonomously navigate a maze, locate a flame, extinguish the flame, and then get back “home”. In robotics, the word autonomous means “independent” or “having the ability to operate on one’s own”. The robot you see here is not a remote controlled device. Rather, my students program the robot’s BX-24 microcontroller brain to react to stimuli in real time. In April 2008, these students will take their robot to fire fighting competitions at Penn State Abington and Trinity College in Hartford, CT.Robodyssey Systems manufactures the Mouse robot and RAMB II motherboard you see here. The robot’s brain is NetMedia’s BX-24 microcontroller, which is programmed using the BasicX language. We’ve heard this song and dance before, but DigiTimes has it that MSI is on pace to shove out a 3D laptop this September. Before you open that jaw and feign a yawn, you should know that the company is purportedly not following convention by integrating NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology; instead, it’ll rely on Dynamic Digital Depth’s (DDD’s) TriDef 3D software for transferring 2D images to 3D. This means that users will be able to use cheap-o polarized glasses rather than the more expensive (and battery draining) active shutter variety. Somehow or another, the whole thing is supposed to launch at under a grand, so we’ll be poking around on the IFA show floor hoping that this one comes to fruition.

We all know that Symbian is still holding the fort as the globe’s most widely used mobile OS, but anyone interested in criticizing it nowadays will have to get into a queue. Nick Jones from Gartner is latest to launch a broadside against the apparently complacent market leader, opining that its user experience has been surpassed by iOS and Android, and arguing that future iterations do not promise enough innovation to make the platform stand out. He underpins these observations with his firm’s latest estimates, which indicate Symbian’s decline in share is accelerating, before positing the idea that the Foundation sets aside some talent for skunkworks projects in order to give itself fallback options should Symbian^4 not be blindingly marvelous. Nick might be going a little overboard with the bleakness of his outlook, but there’s no questioning his “Android iceberg” analogy — if Symbian doesn’t find the right course soon, Google might well end up collecting a big chunk of its exasperated users.
