Dell indicated that it would take Carl Icahn’s bid for the company seriously when it struck a deal with the billionaire investor earlier this week, and it may have more reason to do so now — multiple sources are reporting that Blackstone has now abandoned its rival offer. According to the Financial Times, Blackstone’s investors weren’t convinced of the deal’s merits, and felt that Dell’s value on the stock market is already fair. Blackstone’s deal would have included an option for shareholders to hold onto their stake. With the private-equity firm seemingly out of the picture, however, Dell’s committee may give further thought to Icahn’s bid, and founder Michael Dell’s chances of taking the company private himself have also received a…

Thought that Dell buy out was a done deal? Well, the Blackstone Group and Carl Icahn clearly don’t think so, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that both have contacted the committee of Dell’s board just before the shutoff deadline this Friday. The would-be investors are reported to be working on their actual bid amounts, and in the process buying them up to four more days thinking time. Reuters reports that Blackstone’s tentative offer is already in, according to sources, but at this time the company is yet to comment. Despite a recent slump in profits, Michael Dell surprised many when he announced his intention to buy back the eponymous firm in a deal with Microsoft for $ 24.4 billion. So, if the founder thought he had the keys to the old estate back, he might just have to wait a little longer.

Like Toshiba’s mid-range Satellite U845T, Dell’s lower-end Inspiron R line is getting a touchscreen refresh after the launch of Windows 8. Engadget reports that 14-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch R models will be redesigned with a thinner body, along with optional 10-point touch displays; we’re still waiting to hear just when they’ll be available. The smaller two now apparently weigh in at under five pounds, compared to around 6 pounds for the earlier 15-inch one. As before, the laptops come with an Intel Core i3 processor that can be upgraded for a price, though the cheapest version uses a Celeron processor. The smaller two include 1366 x 768 displays, while the 17-inch model has one that’s 1600 x 900, and they start with 320GB HDDs. The…

The Dell XPS 12 and Acer Aspire S7 aren’t your average laptops. They’re premium, and unique.
One is a razor-thin, Gorilla Glass-infused attempt to transform Acer’s reputation, the other Dell’s carbon fiber-laced realization of an idea that was ahead of its time. Both start at $ 1,199 for a Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory, 128GB of solid state storage, and a brilliant 1080p touchscreen display, but each has its own special way of running Windows 8. The Acer Aspire S7’s screen bends backwards 180 degrees to lay completely flat on a table, sharing a 13.3-inch or 11.6-inch display, while Dell’s XPS 12 has a 12.5-inch monitor that literally spins 180 degrees inside its aluminum bezel, turning the machine into a tablet.

We already got a pretty good look at the Dell XPS 10′s outward facade, but if it’s internal hardware you’re after, you may want to take a look at the FCC’s latest: they tore the transforming tablet apart. The federal teardown is garnished with the standard trappings: FCC labels, frequency tests and Dell attestations — one of which notes the WiFi and Bluetooth radios’ shared antenna and its inability to simultaneously transmit both signals. The XPS 10′s manual is available for browsing, too, in case you need a refresher on how to pinch, zoom or swipe. Check it for yourself at the FCC, or just pop on down to the attached gallery for a gander at the device’s innards.

Surface isn’t the only Windows RT tablet going on sale this week: Dell’s XPS 10 ships on Friday, though it’s actually for purchase now on Dell’s site. The tablet starts at $ 500 for the 32GB tablet by itself, which is right in line with Microsoft’s Surface pricing. The 64GB model is priced at $ 600. Interested in that optional keyboard dock? (Of course you are!) Dell is selling two bundles: one with the 32GB tablet for $ 680, and another with the 64GB one for $ 780. Though the keyboard comes at a premium, especially compared to Microsoft’s Touch Covers, it offers some things Microsoft doesn’t — namely, a USB port, HDMI output and a built-in battery. Whichever model you choose, the XPS 10 has a 10.1-inch screen with 1,366 x 768 resolution and a dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. And, unlike some other Windows RT tablets, this one supports both finger and pen input. Hit up the source link for more info, and check out our fresh round of hands-on shots below.
