Moritz Simon Geist's MR808 recreates Roland drum machine with robot instruments, puts them in an 808 State video

Music lovers will often tell you that Roland’s TR-808 gave birth to modern music. Acid house, rap, techno and other genres owe some of their original (and even current) sounds to that synthetic beat. Moritz Simon Geist appreciates the effort, but has built a solution for those who think the drum machine is a little too perfect: his MR-808 installation has robot limbs playing all the equivalent real-world instruments, right down to the cowbell. A laptop musician at the helm sends MIDI input to an Arduino controller that then triggers the robot’s instrument motors and matching lights. The effect is a unique mix of flawless cues with imprecise, almost organic sounds — imagine 808 State or Kanye West replacing each and every machine with a live band and you’ve got the idea. Although the sheer size of the MR-808 sadly nixes chances you’ll ever see one at the local nightclub, it could give any of Geist’s recorded music one of the more distinct vibes we’ve heard.

SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace are teaming up to cross-promote their private aerospace tech. The duo are kicking off a tour in Asia to drum up governmental and business support for the Falcon 9 rocket and BA’s BA 330 floating habitat. The latter has 330 cubic meters of space and can support a crew of six for scientific experimentation, or ensuring no-one can ever out-do your bachelor party. More details about the tie up are expected just as soon as Elon Musk’s company can get that DragonX to escape the atmosphere.

ThinkGeek Drum Machine Shirt

Here it is — the final piece in your all fabric New Order cover band. This $ 30 wearable drum machine brings a much needed edge to ThinkGeeks existing collection of soft-circuit “instruments.” You can choose from seven different drum kits, including the ubiquitous 808 and a palette of chip tune effects. The T-shirt’s integrated recorder lets you build loops up to three minutes long and endlessly layer on the sounds. Just keep piling ‘em on until your old-school hip hop homage has become an impenetrable wall of noise that washes over you as you walk down the street, proclaiming your geekdom in rhythm. And, of course, the included mini amp cranks all the way up to 11. Check out the videos after the break to see MC Lars and Dex Fontaine demo the capabilities of the personal percussion pullover.

Slappin’ da bass, mon! Bill Ruppert has put up another Effectology video, this time showing how to create a steel drum effect with just a bunch of EHX guitar effects.

The best part? The maracas!

The maracas or shaker sound was produced by sliding an EHX manual across the guitar strings. Using EQ to lower the bass and increase the middle frequencies helps shape the sound. The opening drone sound was recorded in two parts. The surf or ocean wave sound is white noise from a Big Muff fuzz manually filtered by a Micro Synthesizer pedal.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time that Daito Manabe has used some electrical stimulation in a face-twisting musical experiment, but he’s taken things one big step further with his latest project. As before, this rig creates wild facial twitches controlled by music (not the other way around), but it also includes a second set of sensors that allows another person to tap on a virtual drum kit and send the (hopefully) willing subject’s face into a fit of synchronization. All of which is, of course, better seen than explained — check it out in action after the break.

[Thanks, James]

Talk about just in time. With merely weeks to go before Mr. Claus makes his wintry journey ’round the globe, Mad Catz has decided to finally ship a peripheral that was introduced way back in June. Without a doubt, the MIDI Pro adapter is one of the more intriguing music game accessories to hit the open market, enabling Rock Band 3 owners to use most MIDI keyboards and drum sets with the title. The box is shipping as we speak for Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii, and the Xbox 360 variant should be headed to Best Buy in the coming hours. If you’ll recall, this guy’s also designed to work with the forthcoming Rock Band 3 Squier guitar / controller, and it even features a velocity sensitive adjustment for MIDI drums designed to reduce cross-talk during play. At $ 39.99, it’s a no-brainer for those who already own a MIDI instrument or two, but we just might be more excited about the hacking possibilities than anything else. DIYers, get at it!
