The Windows Phone 8 YouTube app has been woefully underutilized, acting more or less as a bookmark stand-in and redirecting users to the web. No more, as the app’s getting a major update today that makes it act more like a standard WP8 app — you can pin various components right into your Live Tile set and play videos (as music) in the background, even when your phone’s locked. Standards like social sharing and search are also in there, and a “new and innovative playlist design” rounds out the refresh. Perhaps the Microsoft / Google relationship is mending? We can’t be sure, but this is certainly one step in the right direction. We’ve dropped the full list of new features beyond the break, and you can grab the app update for yourself right here.

Flipboard has just launched its social magazine app to support Android tablets, including the Nexus 10, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab line.
Flipboard is an app that aggregates your RSS info, social networks, etc. to create a beautiful, flippable magazine. In fact, the app won Best Touch Interface at the 2011 Crunchies. But making sure that interface creates the same experience across all platforms has proven tough, as Flipboard didn’t migrate over to Android at all until June of this year.
Since then, the app’s been available across the entire iOS ecosystem and Android smartphones, and the Kindle Fire and Nook tablets. But today marks a complete expansion into Android.
This is as big as Flipboard’s ever had to go in terms of optimization. But according to the release, Flipboard worked directly with Samsung to optimize page layouts for the wider screen of some Android devices. Users of these larger Android tablets will see larger story excerpts.
It’s unclear whether or not Flipboard will head to Windows Phone next. That seems the logical next step in terms of platform expansion, though there’s no indication that the company has any such plans. Then again, anything can happen. Flipboard may even throw a curve ball and hit BB10 when it finally launches.

Microsoft revealed today that it is expanding the retail availability for its Surface RT tablets. Surface RT will be made available at “additional retailers” from mid-December in the US and Australia as part of “increased production” by the software giant. Microsoft is also transitioning some holiday pop-up stores into permanent retail outlets. Microsoft has not yet shared which stores will be made permanent or a list of the new retailers.
The confirmation follows rumors of Microsoft’s plans to move up its retail distribution during the holiday shopping season. Microsoft had originally planned to extend retail availability in January, but a lack of distribution seems to have pushed Microsoft’s plans forwards. Surface tablets have been s…

One nostalgic modder with a disregard for luggability has updated Apple’s very first laptop to run OS X, creating what he calls “a great café computer.” Obviously, the software isn’t all that’s changed, as behind the white plastic hides the internals of a Toshiba NB100 netbook sacrificed for the project. The keyboard has been painstakingly rewired through a USB controller, and the ball mouse now houses an optical cousin which connects via the original cable. A cordless drill battery powers the thing, which has also been gifted with all the mod cons — WiFi and USB connectivity — to make it pretty usable. If you’re interested in build pics, the tech-savvy hipster promises to post them soon at the source link below, and for a tour of the finished article, a video awaits you beyond the fold.

Inside this new version (3.2), daily users of the blogging service will find a completely redesigned Dashboard, which displays larger pictures and offers faster overall speeds when loading posts. In addition, Tumblr’s also added “spiffy” notifications previews to its iOS application, allowing folks to see when other users reply, like or reblog their posts — oh, and better yet, GIFs now automatically play on the all-new Dashboard. The new Tumblr app’s now live on Cupertino’s App Store — all you have to do is either hit the source link below or snag it directly via your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

As we’d seen just days ago, Mobilicity has flicked on its 21Mbps HSPA+ network, giving customers of the alternative Canadian carrier up to three times the speed of before if they’re using new $ 80 Huawei E366 modem or a compatible smartphone. Unfortunately, the other part of the rumor is also true: there’s now a curb on that unlimited data. Cross the (admittedly high) 6GB mark and those speeds may be throttled without springing for the 20GB that comes with either a $ 20 Premium Data Add-On for phones or a data-only $ 50 Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan. Despite the suddenly lowered ceiling, the higher performance is a welcome kick in the cellular pants for those who want a Galaxy S III without turning to one of the big three providers.

They appear to be strategically placed to ease journeys between San Francisco, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, NV. The solar powered stations from SolarCity are designed just for Tesla vehicles, with Model S sedans being able to charge for free. According to Tesla, a Model S can be charged in about 30 minutes if you want to get around three hours of 60mph driving out of it, so you’ll have plenty of time to grab an In-N-Out Double Double on your way to Sin City.

The space shuttle Endeavour finally bid adieu to its fans in Southern California last weekend, not in the air, but on city streets. The L.A. Times captured this remarkable feat in a time-lapse video, and it’s quite a sight to see the orbiter sailing past suburban houses and fast food drive-thrus. Along its 12-mile crosstown trip from LAX to the California Science Center in Exposition Park, the shuttle atop a special transporter had to maneuver past trees, utility poles and of course hundreds of enthralled residents. This came weeks after it made its farewell tour over the California coast perched on a Boeing 747. Take a peek at the Endeavour’s final fascinating journey at the source.
