Didja hear the latest? Little Ms. Serena van der Woodsen is a closet gamer. Well, at least that’s what her icon tray is saying. A screen grab from a fresh episode of Gossip Girl betrays the little busybody while she’s negotiating the future of show’s namesake hearsay blog over chat. No, not Steam chat — she’s obviously running games distribution service in offline mode. We’d like to think she’s putting that HP Envy 14 Spectre to good use, but let’s face the facts: she’s probably just playing Bejeweled.
[Thanks, Michael]

The residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia are the most tech-savvy bunch of supernatural creatures we’ve ever seen. If Edward Cullen and Bella Swan bothered to email each other, then we’d have been spared the horrors of New Moon. Quite the opposite here, as The Vampire Diaries folks have their fingers close to the undead pulse of gadgets, with one character in last night’s episode refusing to type a text message so they could write out their response with an S-Pen. Fans of the show that keep score should know that it currently stands two to Microsoft, two to Google and the fate of humanity all to play for.

Ahead of any possible Ultrabook announcements, Sony’s looking to give its existing VAIO catalogue a (relatively underwhelming) shot in the arm with a bundle of hardware retweaks. The Z series looks to gain the most out of the Spring refresh, with a new off-white Carbon Fiber Silver color option set to be offered up alongside an optional LTE modem. The series also gets a processor step-up, with new Intel Core i5 and i7 options up to 3.5GHz, rounded off with the choice of SSD storage. Including the connectable drive, prices for the series refresh will start from $ 1,950. Meanwhile, both the S (13-inch, $ 800, 15-inch, $ 980)and E series will get a similar bump to Core i7 processors, with both the S and aforementioned Z series able to lock into an extended sheet battery accessory. If minor processor improvements, more battery options and LTE connectivity enough to fork over your cash, you can expect the revitalized units to arrive early next month.

By the time winter rolls around, Alistair Roberts will probably remember his summer vacation a heckuva lot better than the rest of us. Why? Because he brought an FPV plane to record his mountain biking holiday in the Spanish sun. With a GoPro camera mounted on the servo-powered cradle, Alistair piloted the plane by moving his head and using a remote control — all while streaming first person video from the cockpit into a pair of goggles. By pairing the high tech toy with another GoPro on his dad’s mountain bike, and a stationary camera on the ground, Alistair was able to create a truly amazing vacation video from 1200 – 1500 feet in the air traveling around 20kmph (12mph) — way cooler than any of the ones our dads recorded back in the day. Check out the video after the break.

Amazon is sending book-loving gadget fans into a frenzy with another round of domain name buys. It registered KindleScribe and KindleScribes.com to go along with the KindleAir and KindleSocialNetwork addresses it picked up earlier this month. All that’s left to do is speculate wildly on what they could represent (Thin and light e-reader? Tablet-style touchscreen? Kindle that comes pre-loaded with the Social Network?) and hope the new devices come packing Jeff’s newly patented mobile airbags.

Cardagin Networks, the creators of a mobile loyalty and advertising platform, announced today that it has raised a $ 4.25 million series A-1 round of funding. The round was led by private and angel investors from New York, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia. The startup raised a $ 1 million series A back in March of 2010, bringing total investment to $ 5.25 million. Cardagin will use its new infusion of capital to ramp up product development and hiring efforts.
The Virginia-based network created its proprietary mobile platform to allow small, local merchants and businesses to design, scale, and monetize their mobile loyalty platforms, while providing their users with quick access to rewards and exclusive promotions.
Just as Sundrop Mobile, a startup whose raise we wrote about in March, offers daily deal merchants the ability to capture data and encourage loyalty among its avid users, Cardagin offers businesses a self-service platform built to publish mobile ads in realtime to loyal consumers.
Cardagin and Sundrop both are trying to hit on the main deficiency of the Groupon model, in that local merchants are largely dissatisfied with the level of retention and repeat business they received from daily deal promotions. Thus, with Cardagin, local businesses can begin linking coupon distribution to coupon redemption through analytic data and a custom dashboard, allowing them to make smarter marketing decisions based on customer purchasing history.
Cardagin allows merchants to identify consumers in proximity via mobile GPS, serve them with ads in realtime on-site. And, for all those consumers interested in discounts, a big selling point for the startup’s platform is that, simply by signing up on its homepage, users can access a “virtual mall” populated by businesses in their vicinity offering mobile promotions and loyalty programs.
Rob Masri, Founder and CEO of Cardagin, said that the platform and mobile app were developed and tested in Charlottesville, Virginia, where the company is based, and launched officially to the public in January of this year. Since then, the startup has signed up nearly 1,000 businesses and, with this latest round of investment in its pocket, will begin rolling out the platform to cities across the U.S.

You see, herein lies the problem. At a glance, Nao looks humane. Even kind. In fact, it’s bruited that he’s helped on a few missions in his day. But underneath, he’s a cold-blooded talent snatcher, and thanks to a little push from one Raghudeep Gadde, he might just capture your vacation in a manner that’s superior to your own. As the story goes, this here scientist at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hydrabad, India, converted the humanoid into quite the shooter. He strapped a camera on its dome, and then programmed it to follow a pair of iron-clad photographic guidelines: the rule of thirds, and the golden ratio. Purportedly, Nao does a ton of analysis before finally deciding on how to compose and capture a shot, and for his next trick, he’ll run circles around your existing Lightroom actions. So much for perfecting your craft, eh?

It looks like somebody’s got a new publicist. Sure, the Google Street View car’s received its fair share of bad press lately — what with all those invasion of privacy claims — but we wouldn’t feel too sorry for the little guy. A recent episode of Burn Notice saw the camera-equipped auto make its national TV debut. It probably won’t win an Emmy for its role — it didn’t have any speaking lines, after all — but at least it’s getting some positive attention.

Well, it sure looks like The Mentalist went all out for its season finale, stacking not one, not two, but five iPads on top of each other in some sort of makeshift surveillance system (with an extra one the desk for good measure). Apparently, the show had a shocking twist ending when it was revealed that the surveillance cameras being monitored were actually in the Big Brother house.
[Thanks, Tim]

A tipster sent us video from ESPN’s NFL draft coverage, asking us to identify the giant phone in University of Georgia wide receiver AJ Green’s hand. Turns out it’s a white Dell Streak, perhaps the only phone on the market capable of dwarfing the Cincinnati Bengals’ fourth overall pick by comparison. Keep in mind, Green is a big guy — he’s 6 feet, 4 inches. He also catches footballs for a living, so we figure that, at the very least, he’s got to have average hands for a man of his size. We’re happy to report he didn’t spike the phone after hearing the news. Videographic evidence after the break.
[Thanks, Ramon]
