LG has released its earnings report for the first quarter of 2013, and while they were down overall from last year, there is good news to report for its phones. A net profit of $ 20.3 million is lower than Q1 2012′s $ 214 million, and Q4′s $ 80.75 million, blamed on weaker earnings in its home theater business. The good news is reserved for phones, where sales were up 30 percent from last year thanks to devices like the Optimus G (original, Pro and Nexus 4) and L series. Home Entertainment sales dropped to their lowest level in the past year, blamed mostly on a decline in plasmas. According to LG its LCD sales were actually up thanks to growing demand in Europe and China, but profits took a hit because of increased competition. While it doesn’t expect the overall market to change, it is looking for better results in Q2 as its new Smart and 3D TVs hit shelves, not to mention 4K sets. After previously making the panaroma app available for iOS (and Windows Phone 7 after that), Microsoft is finally bringing Photosynth to Windows Phone 8. As you’d expect, Microsoft has tapped into WP8′s feature set and is offering full Lens support for this version of Photosynth, letting users launch the app directly from the default system camera. Among other functionality Microsoft says is new for Windows Phone 8 is the ability to view shared panoramas and new controls for locking white balance / exposure. The free app should be available from the WIndows Phone Store now, but if you’re not seeing it immediately, give it some time; Microsoft says it may take a few hours for Photosynth to hit every region.
Kantar’s numbers for the final quarter of last year are in, and things are still looking peachy for Apple in the US smartphone market. According to the research firm, Cupertino scored 51.2-percent of smartphone sales in the states for the quarter, which drew to a close two days before Christmas. The second and third place entrants are the same as well, with Android at 44.4-percent and Microsoft’s mobile version of Windows at 2.6-percent sales. On the carrier side, AT&T scored exactly a third of smartphone sales, with Verizon close before at 32-percent, according to to Kantar’s numbers. Sprint, meanwhile, is in third with less than half of that number at 14.8-percent. More results can be found in the source link.

In a world where IPv6 lives and IPv4 addresses are scarce, network providers must fight for survival… or at least, claim their IP blocks quickly. The RIPE NCC, the regional internet registry for Asia, Europe and the Middle East, warns that it’s down to assigning its last set of 16.8 million IPv4 addresses as of this weekend. That sounds like a lot, but we’d do well to remember that the registry churned through about 5.2 million addresses in just the past two weeks. What’s left won’t be around for long, folks. To cut back on the number of Mad Max-style battles for dwindling resources, RIPE NCC is rationing out IPv4 for local registries in 1,024-address chunks — and only to those who both have IPv6 assignments as well as proof of a need for IPv4. With just a bit more than half of the RIPE NCC’s customers currently on IPv6, that could still trigger a shortfall among networks that haven’t prepared for the internet protocol apocalypse. We’d advise that companies stock up on IPv6 supplies before launching the raiding parties.

Eons after it appeared in the US, Amazon’s Cloud Drive is at last available in the UK. Brits can manage the service from within their Amazon account online, or get the free standalone Mac or PC app for desktop dragging and dropping. It slipped in with nary a peep from Amazon, sporting the same US dollar pricing as the American site: roughly $ 10 per year (£6) for every 20GB. So, despite the delay, UK-ers won’t have to pay more than their US counterparts, as is often the case — at least, not yet.

Its bigger brothers have long since made their debut in the U.S., and now the smallest member of HTC’s One series is joining them. HTC’s pint-sized (relatively speaking) One V is now available for all you no-contract types on Virgin Mobile’s website, where it’ll set you back a cool $ 199.
In case you’ve forgotten about the ICS-powered One V (I don’t know that I can blame you), it sports a 3.7-inch display running at 800 x 480, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor, 512 MB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel camera around the back. What’s more, the stock Ice Cream Sandwich UI is still covered up by HTC’s Sense 4.0 overlay, though I expect Virgin to have tweaked it a bit before letting the One V out into the wild.
Oh, and unlike the rest of its brethren, it retains the handsome, Leno-esque chin as seen in its forbearers. Thanks, HTC.
Alright, fine, the One V’s spec sheet may not be the most thrilling — even compared to some of the other devices in Virgin’s lineup — but it’s still a damn sight cheaper than the pair of iPhones that will soon hit the carrier’s virtual shelves. And hey, it’s always nice when a family manages to reunite in a different country, right?
