How would you change the 15inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display

Many will bristle at the implication, but as the MacBook Air inspired the Ultrabook, mainstream laptops will likely seek to ape the Retina Display MacBook Pro, sorry, MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The clunky name aside, it seems that the next generation of devices will ditch disc drives and Ethernet ports in favor of pixel-dense displays and reduced weight. But did Jonathan Ive’s trash can get too full? If you’ve been using one, do you still ache for those phantom limbs, or is it peaceful on that side of the river? Folks, for the last time this year, we’re inviting you to share your thoughts and feelings on how you’d change the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and from all of us, have a Happy New Year.

I already shared my first impressions of a lot of Apple’s newly announced products today, but we’ve also got video from the time we spent with the iPad mini and the Retina MacBook Pro. Watching these things in action provides an entirely different perspective compared to reading about them or looking at static pictures, and seeing the iPad mini do its thing really does a better job of conveying the value of the device, so check out the video above.

13inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display reportedly caught with 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, dual Thunderbolt ports in clear view

We hope you didn’t want Apple’s little event next week to be a complete surprise. After promises of extra details for a prior leak, a WeiPhone forum goer has returned with photos of what’s supposed to be the active screen and ports of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display that might be on stage come October 23rd. If this is what we get alongside the similarly unofficial miniature iPad, we’ll take it. The possible leak shows a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (four times higher in resolution than the existing MacBook Pro) and, importantly, no sacrifices in expansion versus the 15-inch Retina model — there’s still the dual Thunderbolt ports and HDMI video that shipped with this system’s bigger brother. Vital details like the performance and price are left out, so there’s a few cards left off Apple’s table, but the images hint at what could be a tempting balance between the 15-inch MacBook Pro’s grunt and the MacBook Air’s grace.

Apple will be unveiling a new, smaller 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro alongside an iPad mini at a rumored press event next week, according to a growing number of reports, including a brand new one from AllThingsD. It was first reported by 9to5Mac, and as both 9t05Mac’s Mark Gurman and AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski have solid track records when it comes to predicting these kinds of things, this looks likely to come true.

The new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro will feature the same basic body design as its larger, 15-inch cousin which Apple introduced at WWDC in June, and will have a 2560 x 1600 resolution display, according to AllThingsD’s sources. That’s a reasonable prediction, given that the current model has 2880 x 1800. Price is the big question mark, but Apple will likely bring it in under the $ 2199 price tag of its bigger cousin. Also, expect USB 3.0 ports in the latest Apple notebook.

Separately, there were also reports over the weekend that we’d see a new iMac, although that originally comes from a far less reliable source, and so far neither 9to5Mac nor AllThingsD have addressed those reports.

We’ll be sure to let you know when the official invites come through, and we’ll definitely bring you all the news from the event as it happens, when and if it happens.

As a fan of beautiful things (looking at you, Robert Pattinson) I’ve always loved TwelveSouth’s BookArc laptop stands. Designed to keep your laptop up and out of the way on your desk.

It’s not amazing technology: it’s basically an arc-shaped piece of aluminum slotted to fit a specific laptop – in this case the Retina MacBook. At $ 49 it’s a bit pricey but folks who like good design and ergonomics will probably love it.

The new BookArc is available now at TwelveSouth. Cable wraps and special pads make it compatible with the 13, 15, and 17-inch MacBook Pros as well.

iFixit produces repair manual for MacBook Pro with Retina display, tests DIY's limits

While we’ve been fans of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, iFixit hasn’t been so keen — a company based around DIY repairs isn’t fond of a system where most components are glued or soldered into place. That hasn’t stopped the team from developing a repair manual for those who want to give maintenance a try. A total of 16 guides show us how to disassemble or remove those parts that stand a realistic chance of leaving the system unscathed. While that does include some key components, iFixit continues to fly some caution flags: getting to one part often requires taking apart others, and removing the battery carries the very real possibility of permanent damage. If you’d still prefer to upgrade the SSD yourself (when an option) than pay Apple more for a custom order, there’s now a helping hand for your thriftiness.

Analysts have been sharply divided in providing estimates for Apple’s third quarter earnings report. And it would appear that this time, predictions of a mild third quarter were correct. Apple saw a bit of a plateau in Mac sales, with 4 million Macs, 26 million iPhones, and 17 million iPads sold in Q3 2012. That’s compared to last quarter’s sales of 4 million Macs, 35.1 million iPhones, and 11.8 million iPads.

The main question was whether or not Apple’s MacBook Pro Retina would pick up declining Mac sales. As you can see from the numbers, it appears that 5.1 million pixels does not a spike in sales make, as this represents only a 2 percent increase in sales over the year-ago quarter. At the same time, the Retina MBP was only available for a short portion of the quarter being reported, so it’s possible we’ll see a spike in Q4.

On the earnings call, Tim Cook explained that the slowed growth in Mac sales has a lot to do with the timing of their portable announcement this year. It only left a few weeks for buyers to enjoy the new models, as opposed to the February announcement last year.

We pulled together professional estimates of 68 Apple analysts, as compiled by Fortune, who said that Apple would sell around 4.4 million Macs, 29 million iPhones and 15.7 million iPads.

As you can see, iPhone sales are down slightly from Q2 (and 3 million short of analyst expectations), while Mac sales stayed almost exactly the same as last quarter. If you remember, Q2′s 4 million Macs sold was down about 1 million units from the first quarter.

But after spending a full quarter on the market, the iPad is selling quite well, with 17 million units sold this quarter. That’s a whopping 84 percent increase from the same quarter last year, and a 5.2 million unit gain over last quarter.

Analysts also expected iPod sales figures to go down from last quarter’s 7.7 million, which is to be expected outside of gift-buying season. On this point, as well, they were right. Apple sold 6.8 million iPods in Q3 2012, a 10 percent unit decrease from last year.

The line for a MacBook Pro with Retina Display just got a bit shorter. The US Apple Store now pegs the new MBP’s shipping estimate at 1-2 weeks.

The MacBook Pro with Retina Display launched with much fanfare in early June. Apple called it the “most beautiful computer we have ever made.” The model quickly sold out, pushing shipping times to 3-4 weeks, which later fell to 2-3 weeks. Best Buy lists the model with a shipping estimate of 7-30 days.

MacRumors points out that the ship time improved to 1-2 weeks in the European and Asia-Pacific regions.

While the supply levels are improving, the models might still be hard to get a hold of for the forseeable future as the back to school season approaches. Apple’s PC market share is increasing as more people seemingly jump the Windows ship onto Apple’s party boat. The MacBook Pro with Retina Display does not currently have a direct competitor thanks to its amazing screen, thin chassis and class-leading battery life.
