Samsung Galaxy S 4 now available online at Sprint, instore today at AT&T

Samsung’s latest and greatest smartphone, the Galaxy S 4, is making a big move into the US today with an online arrival at Sprint and in-store availability at AT&T. If you’re a Now Network subscriber and happened to miss out on the carrier’s pre-order action, you might want to make some quick moves onto Sprint’s website in order to secure your new handset, which goes up for sale at midnight Central Time. In a not-so-cool move, however, only those porting their number to Sprint are eligible for the carrier’s $ 100 price break, which means all of you who’ve stuck through the dark days of EV-DO will need to pony up $ 249.99 for the Galaxy S 4. Meanwhile, if you’re aching to lay your hands on Samsung’s 1080p handset, you can finally get some gratification, as AT&T is now offering the smartphone for in-store purchase and play. Here, you’ll pay $ 199.99 for the handset, and while it’s potentially more expensive, at least AT&T’s pricing scheme doesn’t involve fine print shenanigans.

An early build of Windows Blue, the next version of Windows, has leaked online on the same day that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer celebrates his 57th birthday. Build 9364, a partner version that was originally compiled on March 15th, has been made available on file sharing sites and includes some of the new changes that Microsoft is building into its significant Windows 8 update. Leaked screenshots posted at Winforum show that the company is bringing smaller tile arrangements and even a larger desktop one to its Start Screen, along with greater control over the color personalization options, and a whole lot more.

For all the money people spend on technology gadgets, it’s about time they got something without spending a cent. In this week’s column, I’ve compiled a cheat sheet to some of the most popular free digital content that isn’t always easy to find. This includes books, music, movies, TV shows, catalogs, magazines and apps, available on mobile devices as well as computer desktops.

This guide is divided into the four major content companies you’re likely to buy from: Apple, Amazon, Google and Barnes & Noble. The free offerings include content people will actually want to download, such as songs from new and established music artists and hit TV shows. I also included some broader-based websites that aim to help people sort through vast collections of free content.

Apple

Apple’s iTunes Store has been a hit from the start, simplifying the process of buying music with a click of the mouse and saved credit-card information. But these clicks can add up quickly if you aren’t careful.

Every Tuesday, starting around 12 a.m. Eastern Time, Apple offers a free Single of the Week on its iTunes store. This week it’s “Déjà Vu” by Coco Jones. In addition, Free Songs are offered every so often on a case-by-case basis, like on Feb. 19 when “The Clock” by the View was offered. Once in a while, albums are available to stream for free about a week before they’re available for purchase in the iTunes Store. This week, I listened free of charge to Justin Timberlake’s entire new album, “The 20/20 Experience,” which can be preordered now for $ 10.99. (The free listening offer ends March 19.)

One spot on the iTunes Store houses all free content in one place, including music, movie featurettes (short clips of films or Q&As with a cast), featured TV shows, apps, books and podcasts. You can find the Free on iTunes page at http://tinyurl.com/boxckdn.

Amazon

Owners of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader are constantly on the lookout for new reading material, especially if it’s free. A helpful summary page that lists all of Amazon’s free book options can be found at http://tinyurl.com/aaq5yd6. People who pay $ 79 a year for Amazon Prime membership and who own Kindles can borrow books from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. This library represents just 300,000 books of Amazon’s 1.8 million total, but it’s a plus that these books are borrowed for free without due dates.

Amazon’s MP3 Store offers a free music playlist for the month. An Artists on the Rise page highlights and allows free downloads of songs by these new artists. The list of March songs includes 12 tracks; all can be previewed or downloaded for free.

Prime Instant Video, Amazon’s video-subscription model that comes with the $ 79 annual Prime fee, lets people stream over 38,000 movies and TV episodes.

Amazon tries to promote a different paid app for free each day. These daily deals can be accessed via the Amazon Appstore for Android on the Kindle Fire, mobile devices, Android tablets or PCs. Past examples include Quickoffice Pro, SwiftKey X and Angry Birds Rio.

Google

Google’s Play Store is big on free stuff. Each day, a Free Song of the Day is given away and this can be found on the store’s Music home page about halfway down, or at http://tinyurl.com/cqdhj9a. Like Amazon, Google promotes a playlist of free music each month, called “Antenna.” Random sales appear in the Play Store every so often, like a global-dance-tracks sale that is going on right now, including 12 free songs.

Free episodes of TV shows can be downloaded from the Play Store. Current shows include “Revenge,” “Once Upon A Time” and “Red Widow.” The Play Store often has sales on collections of shows. For the past week it offered 85 free TV show pilots.

The Play Store carries free public-domain books and ranks the Top Free books in a list, including “The Time Machine” by H.G. Wells. These are found on the store’s Books home page. Digital versions of over 115 magazine titles can be tried free for 14 or 30 days at a Free Trials page.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble’s Free Fridays program offers its Nook users a different paid book and app for free every Friday. (Last Friday, the free app was OfficeSuite Professional 7, which costs $ 14.99.) Users can download these free books and apps via the store at Nook.com. There are also thousands of free books and apps available at the Nook store when customers type “free books” into the search bar.

Free 14-day trials for over 700 magazine titles are available for Nooks as well is access to 60 free catalogs.

Work-For-You Websites

If you’re an Amazon customer and don’t want to bother hunting through Amazon’s website for free content, numerous websites compile lists of free books for users. FreeBookSifter.com is bare-bones, but has 26 categories on the left side, including its useful top category, Added Today.

OneHundredFreeBooks.com is a visually pleasing site that includes categories like handpicked and newest. It even lets you sign up via email to receive free book suggestions in your inbox.

ManyBooks.net sorts books by new titles, popular and recommended; it also includes a search box at the top.

If you’re tired of seeing a chunk of your credit-card bill go toward digital content each month, take advantage of these free digital options.

As 3D printing and modeling moves into the mainstream, it’s interesting to see the rise of small players in the market and the capital raised. Take, for example, CGTrader. Originally designed as a marketplace for 3D designers and artists, it’s just raised nearly 200,000 euro from Practica Capital, a fund in Lithuania. Founded by Marius Kalytis, the company is based in Vilnius.

Most of the models are highly detailed objects aimed at video game creators and other 3D wonks. However, because a 3D model is a 3D model is a 3D model, CGTrader is able to sell almost any virtual object.

A major problem in the 3D model industry is notoriously low royalty rates for designers and artists – the creator of the model frequently receives only 40-60% of sale proceeds, or, in order to earn more, is often bound by exclusivity requirements. This makes selling 3D models online not a very attractive activity for designers, and therefore limits the potential of industry growth,” said Kalytis. He said the CGTrader is “a fair, author-friendly marketplace”

The company takes 6% of any sale and they can use the platform to support their customers when they have issues or queries.

“The funding will be used for developing the marketplace from the technical perspective, building the community further, and, most importantly, expanding distribution channels for our designers – including 3D printing,” said Kalytis. It’s one small step for 3D models of horses, one giant leap for the monetization of the 3D-printing as a holistic market.

Microsoft’s $ 999 128GB Surface Pro has sold out in the online Microsoft Store in the U.S. (via WinBeta), just a few hours after going on sale today, February 9. The 64GB version is still available as of this writing, and the Surface Pro is still likely in stock at physical retail locations like Best Buy, where it also went on sale today, although checking the stock levels via their online tool reports the Surface Pro as “Unavailable” across the board.

The Surface Pro is Microsoft’s more powerful, Intel-powered Windows 8 tablet, which runs the full version of Windows 8 unlike the Surface RT and can handle full-fledged Windows desktop applications. In the TC review, John Biggs said that the Pro was a much more compelling device than the RT, in part because of its ability to run software that enterprise IT departments depend upon from legacy windows installations.

The Surface RT sold out of the $ 500 32GB model within one day, but the Pro’s more expensive model has sold out even faster. That could indicate that users are placing a higher value on storage with the Pro, which is marketed as a device much more suited to getting serious work done than the Surface RT. The 64GB model remains in stock for now, and given that there’s only $ 100 price difference to trade up to double the storage capacity with the 128GB version, that’s not surprising.

Storage was recently the subject of a number of back-and-forth reports regarding the Surface, with some claiming Microsoft left little room on-device for personal files once you accounted for the Windows 8 OS install. Ed Bott reported earlier todays on the actual storage numbers, which beat the original estimates by a fair amount, but the free space on the 64GB version still represents a 200 percent increase from the actual usable space on the base Surface Pro model.

The 128GB Surface Pro is still available to order from the Microsoft Store online in Canada as of this publication date, and you may still be able to grab one by visiting a physical retail location.

This is Lesya Toumaniantz from Saransk, Russia. She let her tattoo artist boyfriend Rouslan Toumaniantz ink his name across her face the first time they met in real life after starting a relationship online. Rouslan must really have a thing for face tattoos because he’s the same dude that was accused (and later acquitted) of tattooing 56 stars on that one girl’s face after she allegedly only asked for three. *bashing face on keyboard* fghnbvfghvf hjhyj rty7hhgffg hvnfghfghbnv I just don’t even know anymore. I really did beat my head on the keyboard to type that though.

The pair – who’d met on an online chat room – say they quickly fell ‘head over heels in love’ and soon after met in Moscow, Russia, where they decided to get married.

‘It’s a symbol of our eternal devotion. I’d like him to tattoo every inch of my body,” she said.

The tattoo-mad former art student whose sister is also a tattoo artist added that above her eyebrow he had written All For Love.

I know that there are people who are terrified that Lesya has made a rash decision that she’ll regret horribly, but sometimes the best decisions are the ones you make in an instant with your heart rather than the ones long-debated in your mind.

Good call bro. As a matter of fact, ALL my best decisions have been made in an instant with my heart rather than the ones long-debated in my mind. You know why? “Your brain sucks.” It’s pure shit. Hey, at least if these two lovebirds ever break up she won’t have to paint her face to go to an ICP concert.

Hit the jump for a before shot of Lesya and several other afters.
