Microsoft and Apple have been locked in a battle over Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud-storage app for iOS. The two companies were originally sparring over a 30 percent cut of revenue from SkyDrive storage purchases through Microsoft’s iOS app, leaving it lacking updates since June 1st last year. Microsoft previously confirmed it was “in contact with Apple regarding the matter,” and It appears that the differences have now been settled. Microsoft revealed today that an updated version of its iOS SkyDrive app is now available to download.

The latest version 3.0 app update brings iPhone 5 and iPad Mini compatibility along with a refreshed look and feel. You can now download full resolution photos to an iPhone or iPad and also control the size…

Liveside has discovered code and assets hidden on the SkyDrive website that indicate a new web-based music interface could be on its way. The code refers to a “MusicPlayer” function, while the assets clearly show controls in line with Microsoft’s current aesthetic.

When we first reported that Microsoft was planning a new cloud-based music service, we heard that the company had bigger plans for it than have officially been announced. As well as revealing the now-confirmed iOS and Android clients and cloud music locker, sources told us that Xbox Music would be accessible from a browser without any additional plugins. This may not be that service, but with “archive” functionality coming to Outlook, and a newly-refreshed Office web app…

Microsoft is pushing out a variety of updates to its SkyDrive service today. Applications for OS X and Windows have been updated to include a new selective sync feature, allowing users to sync specific folders across different devices. An often requested feature, SkyDrive selective sync is particularly useful if you don’t want a large folder to sync down to a laptop you own.

Sharing has also been improved on the SkyDrive desktop apps, with a right-click menu that lets you share or view a document on SkyDrive.com. Microsoft is also updating its Windows Phone 8 and Android apps today. The Windows Phone 8 version includes updates to the visual appearance and the ability to search for files and folders alongside improved controls for photo…

SkyDrive Android stock

Microsoft has released an official version of its SkyDrive client for Android devices today. Available in the Google Play store at no cost, the SkyDrive app allows Android users to access all files and folders shared in the web service and recently used documents. Microsoft is supporting multiple file uploads with its Android app, and other Android apps are also able to access files stored in SkyDrive.

Although Microsoft supports third-party Android SkyDrive clients, the launch of an official app brings it inline with clients available for iOS and Windows Phone. Microsoft is now expected to be preparing a Milestone 4 SkyDrive release with a Recycle Bin feature — designed as a backup option for SkyDrive users who accidentally delete…

Microsoft updates SkyDrive for Windows app new status window, freshened logo

We dug into Microsoft‘s recently updated SkyDrive efforts in a review earlier this year, and it looks as if the company’s still intent on improving things based on user feedback. The newest update to SkyDrive for Windows (version 16.4.6003.0710, for the number crunchers) includes quite a few under-the-hood improvements that are said to bolster “performance, reliability, and compatibility.” But beyond that, you’ll also see a much-requested status window; put simply, this guy gives users a glanceable view at whether or not their SkyDrive is in sync, and displays the time at which it was last updated. In the event that a sync is still ongoing, you’ll also see the number of megabytes and files you have remaining to sync. Finally, Microsoft has refreshed the SkyDrive logo — not surprisingly, there’s a pinch of that Metro styling throughout.

“iCloud not enough?” Microsoft asks on a new promotional page that aims to persuade Mac users to try SkyDrive, its cloud storage solution. While SkyDrive is nowhere near as automatic as iCloud for storing and syncing files, it does offer 7GB of free storage (25GB if you got in early), perfect integration with the Microsoft Office suite, and the ability to sync and share notes out of the box for free using OneNote. iCloud, in comparison, syncs notes but does not let you share or access them from the web. Also, SkyDrive (like Dropbox) can handle all sorts of files while iCloud sticks to iWork documents and files inside apps like iA Writer — there’s no real file system for storing your files in the cloud. Microsoft even provides a…

Microsoft SkyDrive impressions: a look at features and functionality

You may remember a certain, somewhat anticipated cloud service finally coming in to land in recent days. That wasn’t the only news in nebular computing last week, however: perhaps in anticipation of Google’s long-rumored Drive service, Microsoft made some updates to the Windows Phone app for its own offering, SkyDrive. This comes not long after the release of desktop SkyDrive applications for Windows and OSX, all suggesting that Redmond’s hoping to cut itself as large a slice of the cloud-storage pie as it can, preferably while others are still taking their seats at the table. We spent some time with the latest quiver of tools from Microsoft, to see how they’ve progressed.

Skydrive Windows 8

With Windows 8, Microsoft will be introducing new features and apps to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, but syncing between PCs won’t be among the additions. In the comments of a recent Building Windows 8 blog post, Mike Torres, SkyDrive Group Program Manager for devices and roaming, revealed that the service won’t support PC-to-PC syncing without using the cloud because “it adds complexity” both from a technical and user perspective. This in spite of the fact that Windows Live Mesh — which did support file syncing between two or more computers — is being rolled into the SkyDrive service.

According to Torres, the new “fetch” feature that’s being introduced into SkyDrive, which lets users grab documents from any SkyDrive-connected…

Windows Live SkyDrive logo

We saw screenshots of a future SkyDrive version leak over the weekend that offered a look at some new features, but it appears there is even more to Microsoft’s SkyDrive plans. LiveSide is reporting that the Wave 5 Milestone 3 release of SkyDrive will introduce support for BitLocker recovery keys storage alongside OpenDocument format support. The site speculates this could mean that Windows 8 will natively store decryption keys for its BitLocker hard drive encryption feature in the SkyDrive cloud.

Microsoft also appears to be testing out a http://sdrv.ms URL shortener for use when sharing direct to Twitter and other social networks. However, the biggest improvement in the company’s plans is the revelation that SkyDrive may move to a…

Windows Live SkyDrive logo

Brazilian site Gemind has posted some screenshots of Windows Live SkyDrive that suggest applications for PCs and Macs as well as paid storage options are coming to the service. We’ve heard rumors before that paid storage was on its way to SkyDrive, but the screenshots leaked today show that an extra 20GB, 50GB, or 100GB will be offered for $ 10, $ 25, or $ 50 per year, respectively. None of that is confirmed, but if that does end up being the final pricing, Microsoft will be severely undercutting competing services like Dropbox (which currently offers 50GB for $ 9.99 and 100GB for $ 19.99 per month).

While the premium storage options are good news for fans of the service, we’re sure many of them will be glad to hear about the rumors that…
