Samsung and Apple are currently fighting over rectangles and retail packaging. The legal battle is a classic CF, but the process has yielded a treasure trove of early Apple product designs. So far court documents have revealed early iPhone and iPad designs. Some models have kickstands, others are inspired by Sony — all pretty interesting. But today is Samsung’s turn with freshly-minted court documents revealing some early feature phone concept designs. And you know what? Samsung’s early designs are lame.

Once a staple of Samsung’s mobile portfolio, these sorts of fashion-forward feature phones attempted to bridge huge gap between more basic devices and the smartphones of the day.

The designs displayed here are all sliders, and there are three main categories to pore over — there are variations of the 2.5-inch Skin Slide, 2.7-inch Slide, and 2.9-inch Q Slide concepts. Again, nothing super-exciting, but it’s always sort of cool to see what exactly goes into creating a device mean to stick with users for years. It’s worth noting that there are a few familiar faces to be found — the “Q bowl” design looks nearly identical to what the company would eventually call the “Glyde,” a piss-poor QWERTY slider that wound up on Verizon’s shelves back in 2008.

Meanwhile, the Apple/Samsung battle will continue to rage on for weeks to come. The two companies are at odds over trivial, but still substantial (and usually patented) details. For now though, feel free to indulge in a blast from Samsung’s not-too-distant past.

Gallery Photo: MSI Slider S20 hands-on photos

Acer and Asus may have introduced Windows 8 machines in every form factor under the sun yesterday at Computex Taipei, and here’s another from compatriots MSI — the Slider S20, a “convertible ultrabook” with a hardware keyboard that slides out from under the screen. The sliding mechanism works well, with just the right amount of resistance and a satisfying pop into place. It comes across somewhat like an oversized Motorola Droid, with the useful exception that the keyboard doubles as a stand in the laptop-style configuration.

Obviously the Slider S20′s closed mode makes some compromises in thickness and weight next to a traditional tablet, but it wasn’t too unwieldy — and it’s important to note that there’s a full-fledged computer…

Virgin Mobile was originally intending to celebrate the new month by flipping the switch on throttled data, but it decided to push those plans back and announce a couple new phones instead. The prepaid carrier announced the upcoming launch of the LG Optimus Slider (note: it’s not the Optimus Note) and the HTC Wildfire S in October and, in the same press release, nonchalantly mentioned that it would delay reducing throughput speeds for heavy users until sometime next year. No word on why this came about, but we’ll take good news whenever we can get it. The LG Optimus Slider is an Android 2.3 device with a 3.2-inch HVGA display, a 3.2MP camera and 1,500mAh battery, and will be available online beginning October 16th for $ 200 and in Sprint stores October 30th. The HTC Wildfire S will show up in silver at Best Buy and in white at Radio Shack starting October 23rd, and can be yours for $ 200 as well. We can imagine which announcement you’re most excited for. Check out both press releases in their glory after the break.
