Music licensors didn’t waste any time in characterizing Pandora’s acquisition of an FM radio station as an underhanded attempt to cheat performers out of royalties, but the rhetoric has now hit the courtroom, as Broadcast Music Inc. has filed a lawsuit against the streaming service in the New York federal system. Key to the action — which casts Pandora’s move as “an open and brazen effort to artificially drive down its license fees” — BMI asks for a blanket determination of licensing rates for all music broadcast by Pandora. According to BMI logic, the lower royalty rates that terrestrial providers enjoy shouldn’t apply to the online segment of Pandora’s business. As the flip side to that argument, however, Pandora argues that it deserves equal footing with online competitors such as Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio service, which pays the terrestrial rates. It’s a murky decision, for sure. Hopefully the judge has a good supply of Advil.

Paris-based Internet of Things startup Netatmo, which makes personal weather station and air quality sensor devices (as seen in the video above) for use with Android and iOS apps, has just closed a €4.5 million ($ 5.8 million) funding round. It plans to use the funding to launch new connected devices in the second half of this year, including additional indoor air modules (to be announced this month), and also rain and wind meters.
Investors in the round — Netatmo’s first external funding — include Iris Capital, FSN PME, which is the French National Fund for Digital Society, along with Pascal Cagni, Non Executive Director of Vivendi SA and Kingfisher PLC and former Vice-President & General Manager of Apple Europe, Middle East, India and Africa.
Netatmo launched its consumer focused weather station monitoring device last fall. The device allows users to track outdoor weather conditions and environmental conditions indoors — such as air quality and CO2 level — and monitor and chart that data via the corresponding apps.
Although Netatmo is not breaking out device sales data yet, it says its weather stations are currently monitoring the environment in more than 105 countries. ”After a few months on the market, demand continues to grow, and we are experiencing significant increases in sales,” Netatmo CEO Fred Potter noted in a statement. ”Our new financial partners will allow us to pursue further innovations, develop new devices and expand our distribution channels and territories,”
Netatmo said it plans to focus on development and operations throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S., with the goal to expand its headcount as it ramps up the business this year.
Commenting on the funding in a statement, Pascal Cagni added: ”The Internet of Things is the next step in the rise of an even more connected digital world… Thanks to Netatmo’s talented teams and ability to integrate advanced software with state-of-the-art hardware, this company is built to play a leading role in that revolution.”

Second, bluetooth has a limited range as one quickly discovers trying to walk the length of even a small house listening on a bluetooth earphone. We haven’t seen weather stations garner the same level of clever mobile integration as other pieces of household gear — like, say, thermostats. Netatmo wants its newly available Urban Weather Station to inject a similar dose of life into a category that some of us still associate with the thermometer by the window. The aluminum tube design certainly gives a fresh look to the WiFi-linked indoor and outdoor sensors, but the real trick is the matching iOS (and eventually Android) app. It’s for more than just gauging the wisdom of biking to work: the free app tracks historical trends and shares them with fellow users in a network that Netatmo hopes will provide a better understanding of wider-scale and longer-term trends. The sensors go beyond just obvious air quality, humidity, pressure and temperature conditions as well, flagging noise levels and warning if the CO2 levels are high enough to warrant airing out the house. The $ 179 price for the Urban Weather Station isn’t trivial, but neither is knowing just how well you can cope with your environment.

The folks over at Gizmodo are hailing this video from the International Space Station as, “the most spectacular night view of earth ever captured by NASA”, and apparently they get off on these things the way normal people like you and I would a “chicks in latex” fetish film. So they should know. But enough talking intimate pleasures during business hours, this is a night view of earth shot from the ISS. It really is some serious eye candy. Like, even more so than the buddy of mine who can stick a candy corn up his nose and squeeze it out his tear duct. He’s so gross. It’s a great video to watch if you’ve been going through a rough spell and need something to put it all in perspective. In this case that perspective being, “Man, we’re all so insignificant — none of the things I’ve been stressing about even f***ing matter. GET DRUNK, PARTY HARD!”

Every morning, my lovely girlfriend walks through Grand Central Station in New York City on her way to work, and every morning, she sees something odd. Such is the nature of living in the Big Apple.
This happened: she saw a man — a regular dude in slacks and a button-down — carrying his iPad in his butt.

Admittedly, there’s very little news value to this story, but I have to wonder, is this a “thing”? An iPad easily fits in a bag, and there are plenty of covers that include handles, allowing you to carry the tablet like a briefcase. But to a New York straphanger, perhaps this isn’t accessible enough. Perhaps the tablet needs to be as available as the phone in your pocket, and thus the butt tuck.
My main question, if we just assume that this is acceptable behavior, is whether or not the iPad is safe. How tight are this man’s slacks to allow for a securely stowed iPad? And moreover, is it not totally sweaty and disgusting when he whips it out?

Apple isn’t always so forthcoming with certain product announcements. I guess it’s their version of an Easter Egg? Like the Mac Pro update and death of the 17-inch MacBook Pro, they also updated the Airport Express Base Station.
It looks a lot like the Apple TV but it’s white and no longer requires you to plug it directly into the wall. The new Express Base Station supports simultaneous dual-band 802.11n and AirPlay all for $ 99. Maybe I’m missing something but it appears that this is just a cosmetic change with the addition of another ethernet port.
Apple’s AirPort Utility iOS app (iPhone, iPad) was also updated today to support the new Express base station and IPv6.
