In November, we learned that Microsoft was planning to build original games for tablets and mobile phones, spreading the Xbox brand further than ever before, with a new UK studio called Lift London. Now, however, Microsoft VP Phil Harrison has clarified the studio’s mission: to build games for the cloud itself. “I wanted to create from scratch a 21st century studio. Not a studio that would make retail products; a studio that would make games for the cloud, putting together the most incredible talent ever seen in a start-up,” he told reporters during a London press conference. Though Harrison says the company will continue to support retail, suggesting that physical game discs might not go away soon, he suggested that the company’s future…

Microsoft announces new entertainment and game studio focused on Windows 8 tablet developmentWindows 8 slates are riding a wave of 40 Xbox titles into an October launch, and now Microsoft has laid the foundation to deliver more games with a brand new studio focused on tablet development. The currently unnamed, London-based outfit will be headed by former Rare Production Director Lee Schuneman, who has shepherded Kinect Sports titles, the Xbox 360 Avatars, Fable: The Journey and the Xbox’s Sky TV app to completion. Slabs running Richmond’s latest OS won’t see a project from the team for a while, however, as the studio is still looking for new hires and won’t open its doors until November.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. It can be used to display anything (virtually anything!). They are of many types. The ones we commonly use for embedded systems, robotics, etc are of two types — character LCD and graphical LCD. We will discuss about character LCDs in this post whereas graphical LCDs will be discussed later. The most popular type of character LCD is the HD44780 Character LCD. In this post, we will be using the JHD 162A character LCD shown below. JHD 162A Character LCD The JHD 162A LCD is fully compatible with the HD44780 LCD. Hence, the same set of codes will work for both. It is a 16×2 LCD module ie it has 16 columns and 2 rows for display. It can operate in either 8 bit mode or 4 bit mode. In 8 bit mode, an 8 bit is data is sent to the LCD from the MCU whereas in 4 bit mode, 4 bits of data are sufficient to operate it. It has 16 pins, the details of which is given below: JHD 162A Pin Configuration Now, for the LCD to work in 8 bit mode, it requires the 8 data pins (DB0…DB7) and 3 control pins (RS, R/W, EN) whereas in 4 bit mode, it requires 4 data pins (DB4…DB7, only the upper nibble) and 3 control pins (RS, R/W, EN). Though the 8 bit mode is faster and more accurate, it consumes more pins of the MCU. However, the 4 bit mode is also fast and accurate enough to satisfy most of our need, plus it requires only 7 pins for interfacing. Hence, we will be working in the 4 bit mode. In the 4 bit mode, data pins DB0…DB3 are left open. Interfacing LCD Video Rating: 0 / 5

Windows 8 is 'not awesome for Blizzard either' says studio exec

Calling Windows 8 “a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space” may not endear Valve’s Gabe Newell to the folks at Microsoft, but it struck a chord with a member of Blizzard Entertainment’s top brass. Rob Pardo, Executive Vice President of Game Design at the Irvine-based company, took to Twitter and chimed in on the matter, stating that Windows 8 is “not awesome for Blizzard either.” While far from a resounding indictment, it’s not the warmest of welcomes for Redmond’s latest desktop OS. By the sounds of it, the October-bound operating system will have to win over a few hearts and minds in the game development community.

hellboy-make-a-wish-1.jpg

Because what better way to lead us into the weekend than a feel-good story, special effects studio Spectral Motion and Hellboy actor Ron Perlman recently teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant a wish for a little boy named Zachary. Ooh — oh no *copy/pasting quote real quick before my eyes water up*

Zachary loved his visit for two very special reasons. It was Zachary’s wish to meet Hellboy and also to become Hellboy. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted Spectral Motion with this request, Mike thought it would be fantastic to have Ron Perlman reprise his role for the day. Ron loved the idea and donned the makeup once more (with the assistance of Lufeng Qu and Eden Elizalde) and also ordered a Hellboy sized meal of burgers, shakes, and fries for Zachary and his family and the entire Spectral crew to enjoy. Later in the day, Zachary was transformed into Hellboy with the assistance of makeup artists Lufeng Qu and Neil Winn. Both of the Make-A-Wish days were a complete thrill for the families of the children, as well as for the crew at Spectral Motion!

Did you read that? Ron Perlman even bought burgers and shakes and fries for everyone! *sobbing uncontrollably* You know, I told myself I wouldn’t cry when I posted this, but, between you and me, I knew I was lying when I said it.

Hit the jump for a bunch more including little Zachary as Hellboy.
