These boots were made for talkin' O2 teams up with artist for 'walkie talkie' mobile footwear

Sorry, Ms. Sinatra, but the headline parody was all too obvious to ignore. As part of its mobile device Recycle program, which allows users to trade in old handsets for cash, British telco O2 has commissioned local designer Sean Miles to give discarded featurephones a new lease on life. The end result? Four footwear designs – made from the likes of Christian Louboutins, Nike Airs, Hunter Wellingtons and a classic Brogue men’s shoe — replete with a fully functional phone embedded in the sole. We know exactly what you’re thinking: Why would anyone want to hold a shoe to their face? Whether it’s for the love of the arts, a penchant for public ridicule or a closer whiff of the ground below, we can’t say for sure. What we do know is that this truly “mobile” kit(sch) will be up for auction later in March at a planned exhibition. But that won’t be the last you’ll see of Miles’ unholy meshing of tech and apparel — the artist also plans to branch out into gloves and handbags as part of the fuller O2 Recycle Collection. You paying attention, Weird Al? This one’s for you!

Question by Tdad: What android phone should is good to these standards? an up to date touch screen w/ optional keyboard text. are there any phones out there like this anymore? are they all 100% touch screen now? i say android because im with T.Mobile. can android phones be jailbroken like iphones so I can be able to down apps for free? an android phone I can slip my sim card and and start using right away w/o paying for internet

Best answer:

Answer by Jose GuillermoOk… So… To the first question:

a) About the keyboard in latest phones…. Well that is definitely a tough one! But there are still a few options available. These are some of them that are relatively up to date… ( I interpreted an up to date phone (android) as one that is running on android Ice cream sandwich 4.0.x or higher with a fair hardware power) :

- Samsung Galaxy Chat B5330:

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_chat_b5330-4866.php

- Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II I415:

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_stratosphere_ii_i415-5124.php

- LG Mach LS860:

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_mach_ls860-5032.php

- Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_photon_q_4g_lte-4885.php

second:

b) Yes, android phones can be ROOTED (root = jailbreak for android, to make it simple), BUT you don’t need to root your phone in order to be able to download *free* apps ( *cough google search for “alternatives to google play store” cough *).

third: You won’t be able to use data connection in a phone if you are not paying for that service to some carrier. In order to be able to use any SIM card in your phone ( from different carriers) your phone has to be carrier unlocked, means that you did not buy it subsidized by any carrier via a contract. If your phone is carrier locked, you can still root it to unlock it or sometimes the carriers will let you pay some fee for them to unlock it via IMEI .

Hope this was helpfull! sorry if I didn’t explain myself vastly but I’m in a hurry hehe! Good luck finding your phone!

With the advent of cheap 3D printing, I was wondering when someone would jump into the completely custom iPhone case market. Netherlands-based Polychemy has just released iPhone and Blackberry cases in five unique styles complete with 3D customizations.

The cases cost $ 40 and you can have your name or #YOLO printed on the back. Your choice. They come in four colors.

The company is actually a bulk 3D printing provider and can produce objects in ceramic, metal, gold, and plastic. These cases are more of a side project and are printed on-demand when you order. They come in multiple styles including a wonky fingerprint design and a fun maze.

Polychemy is fairly new to the case market but it will be very interesting to see where services like this are headed. Plenty of people have access to 3D printers and with the rise of sites like Etsy it should be easy to make and sell extremely customized objects quickly and cheaply over the next few years. This is, as they say, only the beginning.

Get up from the desk and take a step in to the real life with these Minesweeper scratch cards. They’re just like the classic Windows game except losing actually means something since the cards cost $ 2 a piece. You can’t click New Game with these cards and, as technabob points out, it’s totally possible to lose on the first play. Even better, the cards double as postcards allowing you to send the gift of nostalgic gaming to a buddy.

Connected Design sells the cards for $ 2 each and they are available in both easy and hard with 80 or 120 mines, respectively. Thankfully, the cards also ship with stickers, allowing players to place flags and question marks on suspected mines just like in the PC version. If Windows isn’t your thing, the design company also sell Mac novelty product such as iOS sticky notes and a cleaver iPhone case with an integrated USB drive.

It’s in every science fiction book and movie since forever. Humans — the ordinary non-astronaut kind, like you and I — going up into space like it’s no big deal. And it’s generally believed that one day, eventually, space flight will become mainstream.

But alas, the day draws nigh. XCOR Aerospace and Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) have introduced the first aircraft that can endure frequent repeat trips to sub-orbital levels before tuckering out: the Lynx. Since the Lynx, a small fighter-esque plane that only holds two people, can make multiple trips a day back and forth to space, space flight becomes affordable enough for anyone to take the trip.

Well, not necessarily anyone. By “affordable,” I mean $ 95,000 for a ticket.

You’ll co-pilot the mission yourself, since there’s only space for two. The flight will last four or five minutes, over various spots on the planet, wherein the Lynx will flip upside down to give you a full view of our lovely rock.

According to Chief Test Pilot Rick Searfoss, who has traveled up into space with NASA three times as a Space Shuttle Commander, you’ll be able to see the curve of the earth and the thin blue line that separates our atmosphere from the black vacuum of space.

And though the Lynx doesn’t go past sub-orbital levels (around 100 kilometers), you’ll still feel entirely weightless.

The company has already sold over 175 tickets, and at $ 95,000 a pop, they’ll turn a profit immediately once they begin regular flights with private citizens. For now, we’re only in the testing phase, with commercial flights beginning no later than 2014.

Here’s an animation of the Lynx:

While, arguably, you’re not going to convince many kids to give up their Topps or Pokemon cards for these things, it’s nice to know they exist. They’re 3D Printer trading cards featuring some of the best 3D printers in the world. You got your Makerbot Replicator, your UP! Printer, and your Printrbot Plus. You got stats on there, a little trivia, some pricing information and then you can trade with your friends (“Awwww man, I need that Reprap clone!”)

You can check them all out here or see them in person at Maker Faire in SF this week. Sadly, they’re not actually printing these things but if they did I’d totally buy a pack.

The impetus? They came to creator Shawn Wallace in a dream:

I had a dream that I found a box of 3D Printer Trading cards from 2012 at the Seekonk Speedway Flea Market. When I awoke I realized that might be a good way to introduce some of the 3D printer makers who will be exhibiting at the Maker Faire Bay Area next week. I’ll be posting these all week in no particular order; collect them all!
