Who cares if you never need a see-through laptop screen? This transparent OLED prototype from Samsung is simply cool. To show off the benefits of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology, Samsung Mobile Display trotted out this 14-inch laptop. When the device is turned off, the screen is transparent, allowing about 40 percent of the light from behind it to get through. When it’s turned on you can see icons and applications on the screen, as well as anything in the background. Manufacturers like Samsung, Sony and others are interested in OLED because the technology allows for brighter, clearer pictures while using less energy. Samsung says this 14-inch screen is the world’s first and largest transparent OLED panel prototype. The technology is still very much in the research stage, but this panel shows the possibilities. Maybe the future won’t be filled with see-through laptop screens like this, but do you remember the transparent touch screens in “Minority Report?” They no longer seem so far off. What do you think? You wana Buy one?

For the past two weeks Inhabitat has been reporting live from the Solar Decathlon Europe in Madrid, where 18 student teams from around the world have been competing for the title of the world’s most efficient solar-powered prefab house. As usual, suspense was running high in the final days of the competition, and we’re excited to announce that Team Rhône-Alpes’ Canopea House has been named this year’s winner! The beautiful modular house took top honors in the architecture and sustainability categories, and it features a 10.7 kW photovoltaic array on the roof that produces more than enough energy to power the home.
Some of the other standouts at the Solar Decathlon Europe include Germany’s ECOLAR House, which features a flexible, modular design that can expand or shrink to accommodate the needs of its owners. It came as no surprise that the German team was tops in the engineering category, and the team incorporated hemp insulation in the floors, walls and ceiling to prevent thermal loss. Team Andalucia’s Patio 2.12 House, which consists of four separate prefabricated modules built around an interior courtyard, scored high marks for energy efficiency and innovation. And although Italy’s MED in Italy House might not look like much on the outside, step inside and you’ll enter a different world altogether. The highly efficient home features a central courtyard and a rooftop photovoltaic array that generates about 9.33 kWh of energy per year — roughly double what it needs. Team Rome also added wall layers that can be filled with heavy materials to provide high thermal mass once the home is installed.

Unfortunately, don’t expect this transparent beauty to show up at retail stores when the supersized 3DS launches later next month, as it’s nothing but a mere demo unit. The see-through XL was recently used by Nintendo to showcase the handheld’s guts during a Q&A session on its website, and while it’s currently just an extra-large test dummy, it could potentially be a sign of big things to come. We wouldn’t hold our breath, though, so for now you’ll have to be satisfied with one of those opaque options you have to choose from.

Using a new type of polymer solar cell, the team has been able to build a device that converts infrared light into electrical current. Current prototypes boast 4 percent energy conversion efficiency at 66 percent transparency — not crystal clear, but certainly clean enough to peer through. According to a study in ACS Nano, the technology could be used in “building-integrated photovoltaics or integrated photovoltaic chargers for portable electronics.” Translation? It could one day be used to build solar windows or better sun collecting smartphones. Don’t get too excited though, the technology still has a ways to go before any of these dreams come to fruition. Still, feel free to head past the break for the team’s official press release, or skip to the source to take in the full academic study.

If there’s one thing Sony got right with its NXT line, it’s that design-distinctive, transparent element. Problem is, aside from color matching with your photo collection, that incognito antenna doesn’t do much — well, not with the company’s official blessing anyway. Users that take a quick trip to the Google Play store can download a third-party app dubbed, rather self-evidently, Illumination Bar Notification. And it does just what it claims to do, letting Xperia U users set myriad notification hues (P and S owners will have to make do with white only) and blinking speeds for texts and calls. It’s free to download, so if you’re looking to make that handset sit and look even prettier, you’d be well advised to hit up the source below.

If you’re the sort who wished your car had a transparent roof when the rain falls down but want some shielding when the sun’s up (or, you know, vice versa) then BASF have good news for you. It’s showing off the transparent OLED technology it developed with Philips that behaves like glass when inactive, turning opaque when activated. We’re already familiar with the technology here, because it’s the same kit that the chemicals giant showed off on its custom Smart Forvision it produced with Daimler back in September. As before, it’s also been able to pair them up with transparent solar cells, for environmentally friendly sky watching: just remember that people will be able to see you pick your nose from all angles now, okay?
