Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet is currently only available in the company’s stores across the US or online in select countries, but that might be about to change. Paul Thurrott over at Windows IT Pro is reporting that Microsoft’s original plans to extend retail store availability, tentatively scheduled for early 2013, have been pushed forward. Thurrott says that within days Surface will be “available far more broadly than via its current, limited distribution system.”
Recent reports have suggested that a lack of distribution is “killing” Surface sales. Surface has been spotted in Verizon stores recently, but Microsoft has continually declined to discuss its plans for additional Surface distribution. If the report is accurate then we…
You never really know what to expect when two of the bigger names in tech join forces and announce something fresh. In some cases you may see an end result of things like that RAZR i, but when Dropbox and Facebook are involved, you can surely bet it has to do with sharing something with your pals — and such is the case today. Dropbox announced earlier that it’s now allowing folks to share files with their friends inside Facebook Groups, giving users the ability to instantly post anything from notes to videos with a couple of simple clicks. Of course, those on the other side will be able to like what you share, leave comments, as well as be updated automatically as soon as an edit has been made. At the moment, not everyone’s seeing the changes just yet, though Dropbox has said it shouldn’t be too long before most people can spot the new feature.

A BitCoin debit card could be in your very near future thanks to the efforts of trader-backed BitInstant. That fund transfer outfit, dedicated solely to the digital currency, has partnered with an undisclosed international bank to launch a branded debit card within six to eight weeks. News of the development first surfaced yesterday during an online chat with company co-founder, Charlie Shrem, in which he confirmed the cards would cost users $ 10 apiece to purchase and carry a 1% bitcoin transfer fee, as well as $ 1.50 ATM withdrawal fee. To further streamline the exchange process, users will be able to make quick transfers under $ 1000 by scanning a QR code overlay on front or by accessing the personal BitCoin address listed on back — all possible with a single confirmation. Initially, the cards will be denominated solely for USD, GBP and EUR, but more foreign currencies could soon be added in the lead up to its official debut. For now, those are the only bits Shrem was willing to share, as further details on this plastic alternative will be forthcoming prior to official launch. Until then, there’s always AMEX.

We’ve see BBC iPlayer reach many devices over time, but it’s been conspicuously absent on Windows Phone. Nokia has stepped into give us some relief, and it’s now promising that a port of the TV catch-up service will be ready for your Lumia 800 “in weeks.” Good news no doubt, although Nokia’s encyclopedic knowledge of British TV streaming is also dashing hopes of using the Sky Go mobile app on Windows Phone anytime soon: the same Nokia rep doesn’t see Sky being ready for a “good few months” at the earliest. As such, you’ll have no problems keeping up with Doctor Who and Sherlock when they’re airing, but we wouldn’t count on watching live football matches for awhile.

Occasionally, in this line of work, I need to have a slight freak-out moment where I rave about the fact that things like this OrcaM “reconstruction sphere” actually exist. Not only does this thing look like a prop out of a sci-fi movie (or Transmetropolitan), but it acts like one as well.
Inside that enormous ball are seven high-definition cameras that rotate around the object you put inside, looking at it from every angle and with many kinds of special lighting applied to help determine texture, reflectance, and other factors.
What you get is, within a few minutes, a 3D model accurate to under than a millimeter, in full color and with color and texture included. Perfect for, say, submitting to Shapeways or the like and getting yourself a copy. I can think of many uses for this thing.
It’s not the only 3D scanner in the world of course, just the most sci-fi-looking we’ve seen in a while. And big dedicated rigs like this probably won’t be the future of 3D scanning anyway; the Kinect seems to be filling that role just fine. Either way, it’s cool as hell to watch.

The edited music video, part of Within Temptation ‘s “Faster & Mother Maiden Short Film”. This is the first of three short films, to be released this year. These movies give further insight into the concept of Within Temptation’s fifth studio album “The Unforgiving” and are based on the comic storyline; the characters are impersonated by actors. Each film is followed by a band performance that, all together, form a dark and compelling tale of life, love, revenge, rage, and regret. The first movie, titled “Mother Maiden”, ties in with the band’s first single & video for ‘Faster’, introducing the main characters of the narrative. We’ve seen Senseg’s tactile display technology demoed on a few different devices in the past, but CNET has now gotten a quick look of the company’s latest tech on a tablet, along with some additional word on its future. As with previous prototypes, the screen doesn’t rely on any moving parts as some other tactile displays do, but instead employs an electrostatic field-based system that allows different parts of the screen to produce varying degrees of friction. As Senseg notes, that opens up a number of interesting possibilities for gaming, as well as other applications where you may not always want to look at the screen. Of course, that tablet is still very much a prototype, but Senseg’s Dave Rice says that he’s “optimistic” we’ll see actual products using it “within the next year,” although he notes that could extend to 24 months. See the video after the break or at the source link below.
