If you’ve been waiting to try out XBMC on your Android, it appears now is the time. While beta and nightly builds were already available, the team behind it has finally readied a release it says is “end user friendly,” ready to run on most any device. It achieves that feat by offloading video player duties to another app, in this case MX Player, in order to get around XBMC’s lack of hardware support for many devices. After sideloading the two necessary APKs we were able to get it up and running without any trouble, tossing in add-ins and playing back locally stored media without a problem. There’s a video to go along with the release (embedded after the break) but installing it yourself is probably the best way to get a feel for its video, picture and audio playback abilities.

Surprise surprise, after popping up on the iPad last year, XBMC developers revealed tonight that they’ve created a version of the software that runs as an Android app. Currently the team has it stable on the Pivos XIOS DS set-top box, and posted a video (embedded after the break) showing it running on a phone and a tablet. Of course, the different varieties of Android hardware audio and video decoding is mostly a software only affair, but universal hardware decoding is in the plan. The truly dedicated can dig up the source code right now, but beta APKs are promised “in the coming weeks.”

BeagleBoard isn’t letting the Raspberry Pi steal all the glory in the battle for low-cost computing supremacy. The $ 35 ARM11-based Pi may win on price, but at least the BeagleBone can hold its own in terms of power. After the Model B was demoed pushing XBMC and AirPlay capabilities, some intrepid devs managed to get the second beta of Eden up and running on the ARM A8 dev board. The vid stutters a bit during playback but, overall, it’s a respectable performance considering this is a CPU that would get laughed out of most modern smartphones. Head on after the break to see it in action.

The next version of XBMC isn’t ready for prime time yet, but the team behind it is already talking about what’s being added and tweaked in v11.0, a.k.a Eden. This is the first major release since the media player app added iPad, iPhone and Apple TV support and as such improved touchscreen support is high on the list. We can also expect a new “Files” view in the video library, a different default skin, improved CPU / GPU efficiency, customizable home screens and other UI tweaks as seen above. Now that the list of features is pretty much locked down we’ll be expecting a beta, and eventually final release, but you can hit the source link to dive in early and help test everything out.

XBMC is the greatest media streamer of them all. That’s fact, friend. But it has never had an official real life remote control like Boxee that outed their dual-sided a couple months after the Boxee Box. Clearly someone at Pulse Eight had enough and so, here’s the Motorola Nyxboard Hybrid. Just plug in the included RF receiver and you’re done. The remote is designed to work the XMBC right out of the box and the dual sided design is sure to bring the joy of a QWERTY keypad to XBMC users everywhere.
Right now the system has a target ship date of June 27 with a $ 59.99 price. Of course as these go, that date could change either for better or worse. At least sometime in the near future XBMC will finally become the king of the media streamers thanks to this fantastic addition. [Pulse-Eight via Tested]
