Question by HopefulMD: What is the best field of engineering to study for someone who wants to be involved in the robotics industry?
I was thinking either Mechanical or Electrical… any opinions on one of these two or other options?

Either one would do. You will probably have access to robots in either discipline; I would go into the one that has the most appealing courses to you, and sign up for robotics classes. There will probably be at least one robotics team around as well.

You could go into Mechanical and do a control systems track or focus more on the mechanical parts with a structural concentration.

In electrical you could also do a control systems track.

There is also a need for computer engineers to program the robots.

I would suggest Electrical Engineering. You do need a limited understanding of mechanical Engineering but you can pick that up along the way. The required electrical knowledge is far more detailed and useful. When designing, building and maintaining robots, you will encounter issues of an electrical, mechanical and software nature.

The electrical issues are frequent and you will need to trace though circuits to find faults, as well as verify inputs and outputs, not to mention choosing appropriate hardware from suppliers. There are mechanical issues but they tend to exist in the design and testing stage. The current software knowledge is primarily Hexadecimal and C. So you will require good programming skills and a detailed understanding of Reactive Robotics and Subsumption Architecture. Depending on the application for the robots, you may also require an understanding of Self-Reliance.

Electrical engineering is where you want to be. And we wont be needing the help of a computer engineer. We will program it ourselves. I am an automation programmer, EE.
