They call their OLED ‘super’ because each red, blue, green pixel produces its own colored light. This is what everyone originally thought OLED would be. To get around the issues with the blue pixel changing color over time (blue has a shorter lifespan) LG uses white OLEDs with a colored filter over them, not unlike a standard LCD TV. Sony also uses white OLED tech with filter overlay in the viewfinder of the A65 and Alpha A77 cameras.

Bottom line samsung is using the word ‘super’ where they should be using the word ‘true’. But since Vizio already uses the term ‘tru LED’ it might get confusing. Since these TVs have yet to hit the market, I can’t say that a true OLED TV is going to be that much better. We won’t know until review samples hit the major TV review sites. I will guess that a true OLED TV will have a better off angle viewing experience over something with a color filter over it.

I think it might be safer to go with a TV using white OLEDs. If the blue pixel is going to change over time, that means having to calibrate the TV every few hundred (or thousand) hours and then there’s the risk that over a very long period of time, the shift might be so hard that it cannot be corrected. Only time will tell. Also don’t get too excited about OLED yet, I’m sure when the Samsung and LG 55 inch OLEDs show official pricing, there will be sticker shock. At least they are here and prices will come down to earth in 2 or 3 years.
